There is an old legend of the dogwood that, at the time of the Crucifixion, the dogwood was large and strong and was the chosen timber for the cross. According to the legend, the tree felt much sorrow to be used in such a way, and Jesus, sensing this sorrow and taking pity, transformed the tree so it may never be used again as a cross.
