Dean Ambrose VS Cody Rhodes | RAW | 9.13.12
Coming back from commercial break, a replay of the events at the beginning of Anarchy was being shown. The commentators recapped how the Intercontinental title match had ended, focusing mostly on Dean’s actions throughout the match in comparison to the end of it. The recap ended and Lillian was seen speaking in confusion with one of the officials at ringside before shrugging and raising the mic to her lips.
“Ladies and gentlemen, I’ve just been informed that there’s been a change in tonight’s Main Event… Introducing first from Cleveland, Ohio… Weighing in at two-hundred and fourteen pounds, Briley Pierce!”
There was a pause between her finishing the introduction and Briley’s music hitting, the ex-champion coming out with confusion written all over his face. Despite having lost a match earlier in the night, he tried to perk up and turn into his normally energetic self for the cheering crowd, making his way to the ring and slapping hands. He’d barely climbed into the squared circle when his music was cut off by Dean’s.
“…And his opponent from Cincinnati, Ohio. Weighing in at two-hundred and twenty-five pounds, he is your WWE Champion… Dean Ambrose!”
The explosion of jeers that happened from the crowd as soon as Dean walked out on stage nearly drowned out Lillian’s voice. As the WWE champion smugly made his way to the ring, taking his time, Briley could be heard asking what had happened to Cody. Gaining no answers from either Lillian or Dean, the excitable star could only settle into his corner until Dean had handed off his title.
As soon as the match started, Dean surged forward with several hard punches to force Briley back into a corner. Not giving the referee time to force him back he then grabbed Briley and dragged him away from the turnbuckle, whipping him into the opposite corner. Briley, thinking that Dean would be trying to follow up, was quick to jump up off the turnbuckle so the other would run into the corner, but he was instead greeted with the reality that Dean hadn’t moved forward from his space at all. Taking advantage of the naïve superstar’s initial confusion, Dean caught Briley from behind and preformed a Russian leg-sweep.
From here, the WWE champion continued laying into his opponent, taking full advantage of the fact that he was still tired from the tag match earlier in the night and manhandling the smaller man around the ring. Once he grew bored of beating down on the other Dean dragged Briley to a stand and launched him over the top rope, out of the ring.
Or he intended to. Much to the crowd’s relief, Briley instead managed to catch hold of the ropes and skinned the cat. Dean, noticing what his opponent was doing, moved back over to finish the job. He was instead caught in a head-scissors by Briley, who then used the hold to launch the champion to the ringside floor before once more skinning the cat to re-enter the ring as the crowd cheered.
Knowing better than to stop for even a small breather, Briley ran to bounce himself off the opposite ropes and preformed a baseball slide to catch the recovering Dean right in the head, making him stumble back towards the barriers. Still trying to move as quickly as possible in order to stay ahead of his opponent, Briley followed up by shoving Dean into the barrier by the ring bell and then hit a dropkick to send the champion over said barrier. Stumbling back over to the ring at the referee’s count of three, Briley rolled under the bottom ropes and pulled himself back to a stand, taking a breather in the turnbuckle by the ramp where he could keep an eye on Dean’s location.
This quickly changed when Cody Rhodes’ music blasted throughout the arena, drawing Briley’s attention immediately. The naïve superstar turned to face the ramp with an expression of relief, showing he’d been worried over Cody’s sudden disappearance when they’d been talking mere minutes before the match. Briley’s expression was quickly overtaken by confusion when the Intercontinental champion walked out looking perfectly fine, dressed in street clothes with his title slung over his shoulder.
Before anything could be said to the man taking his time strolling down the ramp, Dean had made it back into the ring and crashed into Briley from behind, making him hit the ropes and bounce back right into a back-breaker. As Dean went for the pin, he was yanked out of the ring by Cody and the two appeared to exchange words, the WWE champion reaching out to pat the title on the other’s shoulder pointedly before turning back to the match. Instead he found himself yanked back around, the Intercontinental title connecting solidly with his head and knocking him to the floor as the referee called for the bell, ordering a disqualification.
Stepping over the downed Dean and ignoring Briley’s yell of protest at his actions, Cody climbed up the steel steps and entered the ring as if nothing had happened and he hadn’t just cost Briley his second match of the night. Motioning for a microphone, Cody was pulled around to face the upset Briley before he could acquire one, raising an eyebrow at the older male. He then glanced over to where Dean was now rising, holding a hand to his head with an ever present smirk as the officials returned the WWE title to him before looking back with disinterest at the still speaking Briley. Shrugging in response to what was being said, Cody held up his title for the other to see before slamming it into his head as well, earning a loud chorus of jeers from the crowd.
Moving to take the previously requested microphone from an official at ringside, Cody found himself face to face with the WWE champion when he turned back towards Briley. The Intercontinental champion paused for a long moment, engaging in a stare down with the other man before stepping around him pointedly to get back to his prey. Stooping down next to Briley’s head, Cody brought the mic to his lips.
“We talked about this earlier tonight, but it was brought to my attention that the ever-so-nosy camera operators didn’t manage to catch it on film for the universe.” Cody started, glancing up idly when Dean’s boot suddenly appeared to step on Briley’s head, before continuing as though it wasn’t occurring. “You see, you and I both take issue with how Sunday’s match ended. We know that I would have won no matter what, but you still have that incessant need to try and prove everyone wrong while I… Well, I just can’t stand for it to be on record that the only times I was capable of defeating you were in a tag match or with the help of a psychopathic referee.”
Here, Cody paused a moment, watching with a curious expression as Dean’s boot pressed down harder on Briley’s skull before lifting and stomping down again. The older male cried out and tried to roll away, only to be caught as Dean dropped to the mat to lock in the Regal stretch. Cody looked down at his title, acting oblivious to the signs of pain and distress from his ‘friend’ as he formulated his next words, oddly calm.
“You did fine as a placeholder, Briley, but as everyone here knows… That’s all you were. Someone brought in with the specific purpose of keeping the title relevant and safe while I was forced to take medical leave. Let’s face it: people respect an active, successful champion more than one who sits around and does nothing but talk.” Cody paused here, hesitating for a moment after his statement as though debating with himself on whether or not he had meant the shot taken at the Women’s title. Shrugging it off, he continued on at a quicker pace as he lifted the IC title in front of Briley’s pained face. “Now that I’m back, healthy and in great physical condition, you didn’t really expect to be able to keep this, did you? I know it’s hard for you, Briley, but try using your brain. You’re not even in the same league as someone like me.”
Straightening up into a stand as cheers exploded throughout the arena, Cody looked at the ramp and quickly proceeded to land a direct kick to Briley’s head, forcing Dean to break the submission hold as Brad all but flew down the ramp to the aid of his partner. Dean turned to face the new entry while Cody moved to the other side of the ring. When Brad ducked under Dean’s initial attack upon entering the ring, he was met instead with a Beautiful Disaster kick that sent him to the canvas a few feet from his tag partner.
Stepping over Brad to get where he could stand over Briley, Cody leaned down to pick up his previously abandoned title and brought the mic to his lips once more, giving the other man a few slaps on the cheek to make sure he was paying attention.
“You have one week to prepare, Pierce. Next week in Washington, D.C. this entire thing will end. Go ahead and think of it as your last opportunity to prove yourself at my expense, but in reality all it will be is me washing my hands of this and every other ridiculous act of charity I’ve done for you people.” Dropping the mic onto Briley’s head, Cody straightened up to look around, taking in the two downed men before locking eyes with Dean once again as the crowd’s displeasure sounded throughout the arena and RAW faded to black with it’s two Champions standing tall in the ring.
Backstage | RAW | 9.13.12
Backstage Cody Rhodes, fully decked out in his gear for the match, was seen chatting with Briley Pierce, the Intercontinental title hanging from one hand. Both men’s expressions were serious as they spoke but before the camera could move to try and pick up on the conversation, it was over. The two men shook hands and Briley vanished the opposite way down the hall while Cody turned and headed down the same hall as the camera, presumably for his match.
Halfway down the hall however, right as he was by the camera, none other than Dean Ambrose appeared. Catching the new Intercontinental champion off guard, the WWE champion slammed him into the wall nearby a locker room door, one hand gripping the front of his jacket while the other covered his mouth to prevent any words. Dean was smiling in a friendly, creepy way as the camera zoomed in on the scene.
“Let’s have a quickchat before our match, champ.” Catching sight of the camera, the WWE champion’s smile quickly shifted into a smirk and he let go of Cody’s jacket to wag his finger at it. “No nosing around today.”
That said, he released Cody’s head and once more grabbed his jacket, yanking the protesting and albeit furious looking generational superstar away from the wall before shoving him through the nearby locker-room doors. Grinning at the camera, he entered the room after and slammed the door shut before the camera could so much as try to peek in.
Even despite being shut out, the picture stayed focused on the door of the locker-room, the sound of things being slammed and banged emitting from behind the doors. Despite the violent sounding events, there was no way to hear anything being said, shouted or otherwise.
After a few moments passed, Caylee Turner walked up to the door, listening to the sounds coming from inside for a moment before smiling at the camera and making a ‘shhh’ motion. Winking, she cracked the door open and slipped into the room as RAW faded to a commercial break.
Power of Prayer
“And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.”
James 5:15-16
Never underestimate prayer. It is one of the greatest privileges we have been given by the Lord. To be able to commune and have intimate fellowship with Him is an opportunity like no other. As I have said many times before, it would be foolish to pass on such a costly gift. Because of the sacrifice of His Son, the veil between heaven and earth was torn, which means that, by His spirit, we have been granted access into the Holy of Holies.
According to the Word, a righteous man’s prayer is both powerful and effective. Righteousness comes from God Himself and it is only by faith through Christ Jesus that we can receive it (Phil 3:9), not by our works (Gal 2:21). Instead of presenting a sacrifice or attempting to cleanse ourselves from our own sin, we can approach the throne of grace and enjoy the King’s presence up close and personally (Hebrews 4:16).
This is one of those lessons I need to take to heart more than once. Growing up in the environment that I was raised in, I used to view prayer as a routine, a duty, even a burden. That is probably why I was so jaded towards religion; the teachings of things like prayer was imposed on me, or at least that was how I viewed it. Now that I know better and I value my relationship with God it has become a huge necessity to me. No longer was it mere “religion”. Prayer is what helped turn everything around—the prayers of my family, my friends, and, of course, my own.
It’s kind of like drinking water in a way. It didn’t occur to me how much I needed it until I tried living without it for a while. To this day I can’t imagine what it would be like to not talk to my own heavenly Father. After all, He is the One who keeps me going (Psalm 3:5).
Lord, thank you. Thank you for hearing me out when I cry out to you. Thank you for allowing me to speak with You freely. There are so many things to be thankful for and I can go on, but Lord I simply want to express my gratitude towards you, for being who you are, the one who I can go to at the end of the day—the only one who I can fully depend on. I love you so much. All these things I pray with confidence in Jesus’ mighty name,
Amen.
