“What Are You Afraid of?”

As soon as I saw the first trailer, I had to draw something for it.

I wanted the audio to reflect Eddie’s more tangible traumas while focusing the visuals on fears that he’s repressed for decades. It’s easy for Eddie’s fears to be chalked up to events that we’ve seen play out, but there’s a reason he knew Anna wasn’t working despite it being ‘perfect’. He might not have known it, but I think a part of him was thinking about his fears that ache the most, the ones that only he knows, the fears that belong to only him and the scared little boy inside him who had never felt like the rest of his peers.

The little boy who fell in love with his classmate and was horrified by his feelings, who swore to never feel again.

The little boy that grew into a man who still didn’t allow himself to fully feel all while trying to save his son from becoming like him.

The little boy who is now a man, who tried so hard to be perfect, falling in love with his best friend despite how hard he tried not to.

I had Buck still smiling in the black and white version to show how the shooting managed to invade memories that Eddie had thought were safe from his fears.
