For our second car in this series is Porsche’s first production transaxle car, the 924. In the early 70′s Volkswagen approached Porsche asking them to engineer a new sports car utilizing an existing VW/Audi engine and vairous other off the shelf VW parts. Unfortunately Volkswagen backed out of the project due to the Oil Crisis seeing the market for a sports car going away. Eventually VW would end up developing the Scirocco, which was based on the Golf, to fill their sporty offering. Already having a car developed and needing to replace their 914 Porsche went ahead with production of the car. The car utilizes a front engine with transaxle setup, having the motor up front with a prop shaft connecting to the transmission which is in the rear of the car (This gives it a weight balance of 48/52 front rear) as opposed to the rear engined set up of the much more famous 911.
The resulting car was acclaimed for its wonderful handling and balance. However it was very slow, making just 95 hp, and it turned out a bit less than reliable. Regardless it was a sales hit, becoming Porsche’s best selling car at the time. Later versions of the car would slowly increase power, ultimately culminating in the model we see here, the 924S, the 924S uses the same engine as the 944 (itself a further development of the 924 with a wider body) which is significantly more powerful and reliable than the powertrains in the early cars.
I must admit I am quite fond of these cars, even if I have never driven one. It checks all the boxes I like, small-ish, light, pop up lights. Porsche decided to move away these Transxle cars going back to mid and rear engined setups for their sports cars in the 90s and remaining that way to this day. Porsche doesn’t currently have a bargain bin sports car anymore, with the Cayman starting at 60k.
