“Please don’t go.”
“I have to.” He can’t stay in the same house with someone who hates and fears him so much. With someone he tortured.
“Then I’ll come with you.”
“No. Oh, no.”
“But we’re a pair. We stay together.”
“We’re not bonded.” He’s said it so often, trying to protect, trying not to be separated. He doesn’t mean to hurt her.
But her hand drops away, and he knows he has.
“Moth isn’t sending me to another safehouse.” Too much risk this will happen again. He was a fucking Handler, there must be more than Opal.
“They’re not throwing you back out on the streets?” She moves her hand closer, still not touching.
He shakes his head. “I’m going to-to Mr. Gurin.”
“Kolya.” She closes her eyes, grabbing his hand and squeezing it. She tilts her head down, so her long dark hair shields her face, and he sees her muscles tense. He squeezes back, hoping it’s comfort.
“All right.” She lets out a long breath, opening her eyes. “J wish you weren’t leaving. I wish you weren’t going-there. But-will you do something for me?”
“Anything.”
“Protect Kolya.”
“What—why?”
With her free hand, she flips her hand around, taking in the whole room. “He’s already had one close call. All this depends on him to keep it safe and funded. So you need to keep him safe.”
“To keep you safe.”
“Will you?”
“Yes.”
