thinking about endings where snake just. gets trapped in that coffin while everyone else dies
seriously though the thing that fucks me up the most about axe ending was that clover was avenging her brother when he wasn’t actually dead and would, in fact, recover from his sedation right around the time clover was hacking off peoples’ arms.
in order to escape, clover would also need to walk right through the room in which light was trapped.
however, without akane and santa, clover stood no chance of opening the coffin to find him inside. even while he might be able to call out to her, she probably wouldn’t have been able to open the coffin. the coffin ending demonstrates that clover did not write the “truth is gone, truth is gone” note herself but rather found it in the captain’s quarters, and junpei was only able to parse it’s meaning with akane’s help, and then only realized that it connected to the coffin via his access to the morphogenetic field. in the axe ending, clover doesn’t even take the note with her, so the chances of her figuring out the note’s connection to the bracelets and the coffin is almost null. she also killed akane and aoi, the people who would have known how to open the coffin if shit hits the fan.
so it would have to go something like this: after clover kills junpei and hongou (i can’t really see hongou defeating her if she has an axe and the bloodlust we saw with junpei), she enters the chapel. light has regained consciousness inside the coffin and is knocking on the lid. either she ignores him and attempts to leave, but discovers that the bracelet combos don’t add up the way she thinks they do. at some point she probably says something in exasperation and light recognizes her voice. he calls out to her, and she realizes that her brother wasn’t actually dead. now she just has to get him out of there, and they can escape together, using some combination of bracelets they’ll figure out together (and if worse comes to worse, light can just take his off).
however, she can’t get the coffin open. she tries every combo she can think of. she combs the room for clues. she tries the axe (but if you think akane and aoi hadn’t reinforced the coffin you’re kidding yourself). all the while, light is becoming more disoriented and exhausted from the oxygen deprivation (as well as like, recovering from general anesthesia and having not eaten since who knows how long.) eventually he stops responding.
i’m not sure how long clover would keep trying to save her brother or when she’d go on to try to escape the room alone. but clover would not only never get closure for the events of the nonary game, but she’d have to live with herself knowing that she had killed to avenge a death that never happened and that she was ultimately unable to save her brother alone.
HEY YOU EVER THINK ABOUT HOW AXE ENDING CLOVER INADVERTENTLY LEFT HER BROTHER TO SUFFOCATE TO DEATH IN THAT COFFIN?
