And a Very Happy Start

Originally a 9 Forum exclusive but I don’t think I want it to stay that way...

I originally wrote this as the first, and most optimistic, segment in a larger fic. When it became clear to me that, for logistical reasons, I’d never be able to finish the entire story, I completely deleted all traces of the rest of it – something I never do – in order to really and truly preserve this ending. Or beginning, as it were.

This story is about us, too. Happy 8th 9iversary, everyone, one more time! Here’s to many years more! <3

They stood together next to the burnt-out memorial as time and water dripped slowly down around them. Every second that passed, every drop of rain that soaked its way into 9’s burlap, felt like a transition, and 9 was more than happy to stand there with 7’s hand in his and wait to see what beautiful new world they added up to.

The first thing, though: 7 turning to him, alive and lovely and splotched with damp like he was, and saying in an eminently practical tone, “We should go inside.”

9’s spirits fell immediately at the suggestion. “What?” he asked. “Why?” The world was safe now. But beside him 3 and 4 nodded their agreement, looking unhappy.

“We’re made of metal and cloth, 9,” 7 said patiently. “Too much water isn’t good for us.”

“Oh. All right.”

A moment of silence. 9 craned his head back toward the sky and thought of the others: no longer metal, no longer cloth, but something else instead – one with the rain, perhaps, that fell on them now. Where had they gone? What had they done?

He remembered their smiling faces, iridescent with transparent green light, and felt a wave of relief. 1’s crumpled body, buried beneath the corpse of the machine, replaced by a small smile and an insubstantial hand on his shoulder. The sight of 8’s red-threaded mouth, 6’s limp form tumbling into an empty chasm, replaced by that of a comradery he had never seen them share in life. 5, 5. Eyepatch whole, mouth no longer gaping. And 2, his hand on 5’s shoulder, looking at 9 with peace and understanding in his eyes.

The end is not the end. Everything in him sang with the knowledge. Something always came after: the dead brought back to some kind of life, a perfect pinwheel in the sky, the gift of rain. 7’s hand, still resting in his. The world in its fullness, becoming what they would make of it.

7 squeezed his hand. “9?”

He squeezed back. “I’m ready,” he said. “Let’s go.”

My 9 post

Well, seeing as most of the 9fandom is doing this in honor of the 9iversary  I may as well too...

I first found out about 9 because of the WALL-E fanforums. Someone had posted a topic showing the trailer, and I was intrigued. I'd never seen something like that before. I then went and saw another trailer for it on OnDemand...and when I mentioned it off-handedly to my then-roomie, she told me about the original short.

After I saw that, I was more interested than ever. I found the 9forum, I took part in some light discussions, I posed my own theories and gushed over how nice the film looked aesthetically, how interesting the concept was, how I was already falling for the characters--or I guess the idea of who they could be. Namely 6 and the twins. I had been enthusiastic about movies before, but this was the first time I'd been early to the party enough to be enthusiastic about a film while it was still being made/just-promoted. 

I made some great friends in the fandom...oh, I didn't befriend everyone, I was never one of the popular forum-members by a long shot, but the few friends I made, I loved. I thought of the board as a second family--and good thing for me, too, because at the time? I was just starting school, away from my own family, away from my home and friends, and my roomies and I never got along that well...I was always left alone and neglected. The 9forum was my home, my family when I was so far apart from others in my life. And I loved everyone I befriended there.

When the film came out, I got to see it the night it premiered, at 9:00. I liked it so much I saw it in theaters three more times, and got the DVD as a treat for myself one rainy day. I wrote fanfic, I shipped, I drew, I made offspring-OC and a few RP characters--one of whom got a detailed backstory with a friend's characters, I joined RPs.

I love this fandom. I love it so much. And while I may not be as active as i used to be, I do still check in on the forums, I do sketch and try to write more fic, I follow a great 9 AU (ahemhem) and still RP with my friend.  So, everyone in the 9forum, every fan I befriended because of this movie or forum or someone I found out liked 9 AFTER we were friends...I love you all. This is one of my favorite fandoms to be a part of. We're all awesome and I love it.

Happy third anniversary to that wonderful movie, 9! This is a day for celebration, and celebrate we will! :D

Suffice to say that I owe just about everything I am today to 9, its Forum, and the people in it. 'Cause I was a bit of a mess before, and I really, really don't like thinking about who, what, and where I'd be right now if I hadn't found 9 and everything that followed.

And so I am sending out my eternal love to everyone even remotely connected with 9. Because we are an awesome crowd, and, all things good willing, we will continue to be for a long time to come. <3
