Enlightenment Stories and discover. Maps, photos, and old letters, are the pieces of the puzzle that all of us carried on this trip. Carrying them close to the breast—their importance more significant than our passports and credit cards. Mary and Scott are long time members of the “Sons, daughters and grandchildren of the American veterans of the Battle of the Hurgtgen Forest” and each made the trip again to share their ancestors’ stories and discover new ones. Over the decades each member to the group has collected and researched family member’s journey in the army during WWII. A large percent of this group had relatives who were part of the 9th Infantry Division. My Great Uncle Guy Remington was a 2nd. Lt. in C Battery, 26th Field Artillery Battalion, 9th Infantry Division. The common goals of the group are discovery, sharing stories and preserving the rich personal narratives of our ancestors during this incredible time in our history. The chance to hear and share these experiences of many brave soldiers and civilians from WWII is unforgettable. I feel compelled to help share my knowledge through these stories somehow, as the greatest tragedy will be if we forget. Our traveling companions came from all over the world and spread across many generations. Rafiki being the youngest. German, American, Dutch, French bonded and become a group of modern day allies. I was prepared to hear historical facts about battles, the strategies, and statistics of WWII but I was completely enlightened by hearing the perspectives of the Europeans whose ancestors lived through WWII in their backyards and have carried the tragic scars for decades.
