At least he had an outlet for his anger as he encountered stray agents on his way out, but Steve couldn't shake off what he saw that easily, Bucky’s anguished face filling up his mind.

“The man on the bridge… who was he?”

Steve runs through the maze of rooms and corridors, he screams and yanks a door off its hinges, unable to keep the fury contained.

“It's alright, Steve.”

“But I knew him.”

“But you knew me, Bucky.” Steve almost sobs. He’s finally outside the sunlight hitting him in the eyes as the memory of the video overtakes him, unable to take another step. His chest feels heavier than it ever had since waking up in this century.

There’s a beat of silence before he hears a sharp intake of breath and Bucky whispers “I know.”

“But,” Monty starts, looking dubious because the Captain doesn’t quite match Bucky’s description of his Steve. “We thought he was smaller.”

“So did I, Monty,” Bucky sighs. “So did I.”

As Steve learns one warm July evening at Coney Island, some birthday wishes do come true.

Of birthday traditions, homecoming, and a love that’s patient and persistent.

Snippet:

Steve looks out to the water, taking in the salty ocean air, watching the light reflect off the surface. It’s still a little crowded but luckily he has a bench all to himself and he feels okay.

After a while he gets out his sketchbook, starting off with quick, minimalistic studies of people and objects on the beach, but soon finds himself turning over to a new page and starts drawing a face, his favourite one. 

The sun has almost set and the lights are starting to come on all around him. He loses himself in trying to get the bow of Bucky’s lips just right and isn’t paying attention when someone walks up to the bench and sits down a little too close for his liking. 

Steve is just about to look up and ask them to move away and to let them know he’s not looking for company when he hears the voice he’d recognize anywhere, any time, across centuries. 

“You’ll ruin your eyesight drawin’ in the dark, Stevie.” An echo from decades past. The cadence and the Brooklyn intact. Even after everything.

He is pretty sure it’s an animal and it sounds pained. He enters the alley and tries to locate the source. He can see quite well even though there’s barely any light from the street in here. There's a slight movement behind one of the boxes next to the dumpster, and Steve shuffles forward when he hears tiny mewls.
