Creepy but great customer service
United Airlines scared me and then impressed me.
I was on the United website trying to change a flight reservation when I decided to call the United 800 number for some help. My call went directly to an automated response system which quickly replied in an automated voice “Thank you for calling United Airlines. I looked up the number you are calling from and found an account. Am I speaking with Robert?”
I said yes and then the automated voice replied: “We noticed you recently tried to change a reservation on the United website. Are you calling in reference to that?” Again I replied yes and then I was forwarded to a real person.
It was bit uncomfortable at first that an automated voice identified me so quickly and knew exactly what I had recently been doing on the United website. But then I appreciated saving the time and hassle of explaining to a customer service rep who I was and what I was trying to do. When I was connected to a real person, she was able to quickly help me.
Of course this was just a vivid example of what we all know is reality today: there is no privacy--- your online activities as well as your phone calls are being tracked, recorded and/or analyzed. More often than not this data is used to determine what ads to show you. Optimized ad delivery is not something consumers really appreciate.
In the case of United Airlines, an optimized customer service experience was something I appreciated. While it felt a bit creepy at first, In the end I was fine (even impressed) that Untied was correlating my personal information from my website visit with my phone call and using that data to deliver great customer service.
United Airlines Checked Baggage Scam
Recently was traveling back home from SFO to Mumbai, India via United airlines. My wife and me purchased the ticket from united.com and got this email confirmation which clearly states the baggage allowance as two checked bags free.
But when I reached the check in kiosk the "Customer Service" agents were extremely rude and flat refused to even consider the email communication. Clearly stating that I had a choice of either paying the $100 for the bag or canceling my ticket!!
This seems like a scam that United is running to extort money from paying customers by misleading them with communication and then charging them for a mistake made by the airlines.
Please share this post with other travelers so that we are able to save them from the extortion racquet that United airlines is running on international travelers!!
