I remember seeing an old Tumblr post about The Breakfast Club.

It's probably been over 10 years at this point, but what I distinctly remember about it was:

Allison Reynolds, a basket case with no friends, decided one day to visit school when there was no one around. Having been a kleptomaniac, she presented her findings from the week, showing off

A switchblade

A scrunchie

A gymsock, and

A calcuator

Now, to the uninspired, these might just be a random assortment of belongings that their owners might or might not miss. However, to Allison, they were her inspiration.

She thought of the people to whom these items belonged to, and what their lives were like. She thought the worn-down calculator might belong to a Brain, the sweaty and smelly gymsock belonged to an Athlete, the stylish scrunchie might belong to a Princess, and the switchblade might belong to a Criminal. Finding no other reason to stay there, she thought of why THEY might've been in detention themselves.

The Criminal obviously would've done something petty, so perhaps he had pulled the fire alarm. The Princess and Athlete were probably in similar boats, having been the ones to get caught while their "friends" egged them on; the specifics - the Athlete taping a classmate's butt closed and the Princess skipping school to go shopping - clearly differing. However, the Brain was a bit trickier. Someone who's a good egg wouldn't dare step out of line like the Criminal, nor would they value social status like the Athlete or Princess, so why would HE be there?

And then, it hits her.

Education is such a stressful endeavor. She'd seen reports of fellow classmates getting into all sorts of trouble with their friends, just to cope with the dreaded existence of high school.

However, when you remove all that, when you remove the trouble and the friendship... how do you cope?

You don't. You can't.

You cannot, for the life of you, cope with school.

You need to find a way out.

When the flare gun was found in his locker, he couldn't explain why it was there, so there he wound up, with the rest of the dentionees.

Alright, she thinks. Now there's motive for their being here. But what about their home lives? Part of life is Nature, and the other is Nurture.

She has the Criminal - whom she names Bender for always bending the rules to the point of breaking them - have an abusive father and a despondent mother, leading to his behavior being subconscious cries for help. She has the Princess - whom she named Claire after the earring store she'd sometimes pass by in the mall - have emtionally divorced parents who'd fight as use her as a pawn against their mental game of chess. The Athlete - whom she names Andrew Clark after seeing the initals A.C. written on the sock, and seeing a book about Lewis And Clark on the shelf of the library - would have similar parental issues, though only with his father, whos approval was a damn near impossible thing to win. The Brain - whom she cleverly named Brian, an anagram of Brain - would have it just as hard, having his suicide inspired by all the academic stress his parents put him under.

As she began to create these narratives for her fellow classmates, she would see them in different lights. Despite having begun with stereotypes from what she'd read or what she assumed, she began to see that they were all more than just a Brain, an Athlete, a Princess, and a Criminal.

Having realized that, she knew that she was more than just the Basket Case that everyone else made her out to be. She was Allison Reynolds, a living feeling person, with faults and virtues, with quirks and charms, with hopes and dreams.

Allison x Andrew from the breakfast club is actually like my favorite pairing ever. They’re so good for each other my heart can’t handle it.

Meanwhile if you ship Claire x Bender you probably think After was a good story and read my mafia/werewolf/vampire/bad boy/billionaire boyfriend wattpad fic. Nuff said. Cause y’all don’t want me to get into it!
