Shelly Winters was born on August 18, 1920, and had a career that spanned seven decades. She was a two-time Academy Award winner and received Best Supporting Actress Awards for The Diary of Anne Frank (1959) and A Patch of Blue (1965). She also received Academy Award nominations for A Place in the Sun (1951) and The Poseidon Adventure (1972). She won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for The Poseidon Adventure. Among her many movies, she gave memorable performances in A Double Life (1947), The Night of the Hunter (1955), Lolita (1962), Alfie (1966) and Next Stop, Greenwich Village (1977). She died in 2006 at the age of 85.

A Patch of Blue was released on 10 December 1965.

Guy Green produced, directed, and wrote the film, based on the 1961 novel Be Ready with Bells and Drums by Elizabeth Kata.

20-year-old Elizabeth Hartman was cast (in her film debut) as Selina D'Arcy, along with Sidney Poitier and Shelley Winters.

The film was a commercial and critical success (although many theaters in the South cut the scenes of Poitier and Hartman kissing). It was nominated for 5 Academy Awards, including Best Actress, Best Black-and-White Cinematography (Robert Burks), Best Score (Jerry Goldsmith), and Best Art Direction. Shelley Winters received the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress (her 2nd, after 1959's The Diary of Anne Frank).
