#a small request

Hi, internet family!

This is not a real asking-for-money type post, I promise! More a sort of...if you like the things I write, and you have been thinking about buying a thing I write, now would be a really lovely time?

So this small monster (in the pic above) has been diagnosed with *aggressive* hyperthyroidism - like, it basically went from 0-60 super-fast; her T4 value should be around 2.5-3.0 and suddenly it's at 11 (on a scale of about 20) - and the two options are either 1) meds twice a day for the rest of her life, or 2) radioiodine therapy, one time, 95% effective. She went from weighing around 9 pounds to 7.1 in just a couple months, which is a lot when you're a little kitty!

Either way it's going to be expensive, but because she's healthy otherwise, and we could hopefully have her for many more years (she's 13, but, again, otherwise totally healthy; kidneys are fine, heart is fine, my family has had several cats that lived to be ~20), so we're going to do the one-time radioiodine therapy.

Which starts at, er, $2,500. Might be more, depending on how long they need to keep her in the clinic until she, er, passes the radioactive isotope (yep). But we did the math and that's actually cheaper than, say, another 5+ years of her medication 2x daily.

So, again, not at all a sort of "send us money" post! - we *can* afford it, it just...is a big expense we had not budgeted for, which we will essentially have to pay mostly at once (we did the deposit already, the rest is due in early June after her appointment).

And there are many many other big important things happening in the world right now! over here we have been donating to World Central Kitchen! - so, again, no worries; we are okay and we shall be okay! It's just a surprise!large amount of money, as it were.

But if you would like to buy a thing I write, if you like LGBTQ romance and fantasy and history and bad puns about bread, and you've been thinking about maybe trying a story of mine, we would certainly appreciate it right around now, as it were?

The Wedding Specter

There should always be a specter at a wedding. He sits in the back of the room, looking. Watching. He observes the union of two happy people without being happy himself. That is the role I fill.

I have three friends at this wedding. And the girl I came in with isn't one of them. It's a lovely day full of happy couples. Full of children, and grandchildren, and aged grandmothers having a chance to smile at the new future these two get to make. But I don't get that luxury. It's my job.

My place is to look. To listen. I see the beginnings and endings unfolding in the room. I make small talk with the outliers. I encourage them to come together with their new families, but I am not part of the family.

I know the bride. I know the goom. I once had a crush on one of the bridesmaids. Her brother is the only other friend I have in the room. My date is awkward. She's cold and lonely. She doesn't know any of these people. And she doesn't understand their importance to me.

I created this wedding. I made it happen. I worked in the background. The photographer is never photographed, the caterer never gets to eat the dinner. So too I never take the spotlight. I don't resent this. I like it this way. I have power. I ensure my friends are happy.

I can't help but wonder about my own wedding. Some days I am sure it will never happen. But sitting in the room of happy people and seeing love so prominently displayed... I can't help but feed a tiny spark of hope. I look at my date as she makes small talk with the new family and I consider what future may lay in wait for us. But I doubt my own hope.

The reception drags out. The music kicks in. I stay for one dance. And then I leave. That too is part of my job. A good specter leaves the light, the fun, and the love. I am not made for those things tonight. Now is the time for couples, for love, and to stop thinking about the future. That is why the specter goes. He takes the darkness with him.

A small request... || Edmund & Kieran

The wax with the seal of the Seelie Queen cracked satisfyingly under his finger tips. A letter had been slipped under his door earlier in the day. It was an invitation, or more like an order, to perform at one of the numerous parties that the Queen and her court attended. The dark ink was a stark contrast to the creamy paper, making it hard to ignore the words swirling over it.

If he had to do it, Kieran figured he might as well do it right. At least this had come directly from the Queen, it seemed he was climbing the ranks again through whatever means necessary. It would be unbearable if someone else ended up being the star of the show. If someone else were to describe him they might choose the word diva but Kieran objected to that idea. He just liked to make sure his image was a good one, not pure or anything, but spoken of with reverence. 

Musical ability might not be the first thing anyone would think of when they thought of Kieran, but he was an relatively skilled lutist. Enough so that he felt that he had the right to drop in on the composer to make sure things were heading in the right direction.

It took more time than Kieran would like to admit to, but eventually he did find the composer. Better to catch them before they started composing, so he could make sure his best skills are showcased. Kieran rapped his knuckles against the dark wood door, muffled music could be heard through the door. 

“Hello? Edmund? The famed composer?” he let his voice flow melodically, gently mingling with the music as he waited for a reply.

We’ve reached 50 posts and 521 followers, and so I figure this is as good a time as any to make a small request, of sorts.

I had a really heartfelt, quite lengthy post for this half-written before I realized that what y’all will want is the simple long and short of it, which is:
