…how has it been so long since I’ve done an update? Well, things have been busy…end of the semester, several Academic Projects that all had deadlines around the same time, one of the worst teaching schedules I’ve had in years, and resultant exhaustion…

…but! “Quest for the Elf King’s Sword” is out now!

This is my MM novella for this year’s JMS Books anniversary – the theme is the 1980s, and so I had a ton of fun with a story loosely inspired by some of my of-the-era elf-punk fantasy influences: Labyrinth, The Never-Ending Story, Mercedes Lackey’s SERRAted Edge & Bedlam’s Bard novels, very early Tanya Huff, Rick Cook’s Mall Purchase Night (slightly too late but the right genre!) (also the title is a Walpurgis Night pun), some Barbara Hambly, some specific Terry Brooks, and so on!

Even better, I actually had fun writing this one – I’ve been so busy and so exhausted that I haven’t had much creative space left, but this story just came together, and I even started little bits of a sequel for them, and it feels so good to have the words turn up and flow outward again. I hope that is a good sign.

honestly? abandoned/on indefinite hiatus/very slow to update fics, even and especially AUs and longfics, are often some of my absolute favorites. and people who refuse to read them are missing out!

for one, stories don’t have to be finished to be enjoyable and worth reading. but also? an unfinished fic is a whole little universe that just keeps on existing in my head! their world stays alive for me in a way that doesn’t always happen with fics I binge read and finish, and i love it. i don’t know how their story ends, so it just keeps going! and even when those stories DO update and finish years later, they’ve been in my head for so long that they stick around like old friends.

so to any author with unfinished works: thank you SO much for sharing what you had without waiting to finish it first. you’re just giving me the gift of getting to spend more time with your story and your idea. if you do update again someday, i’ll be delighted to jump back in! but if you don’t, just know a little piece of your world still lives on in a beloved tiny terrarium in my brain. i promise i’m taking good care of it :)

I just really hate the word "fandom". It's just a portmanteau of "fan" and "random". It sounds like some desperate attempt to be quirky and different. Plus, the word "fanbase" already exists.

Actually, Anon, fandom is significantly older than fan base or fanbase; the OED gives the first known citation of fandom meaning “the community of fans of a thing” from 1903, while their first entry for fan base isn’t until the 1970s. If you compare the frequencies of the two terms in Google Ngram Viewer, you’ll see that fandom has historically been far more frequent, with fan base running a distant second (and the closed form fanbase an even more distant third).

The OED also rejects your portmanteau hypothesis, though I suppose sportswriters from the 1900s might’ve been trying to be quirky and different when they coined fandom from the productive derivational suffix -dom, which the OED also gives copies examples of throughout the 1800s (including BA-dom, old fogey-dom, blizzard-dom and theater-dom.

Respect the fandom, guys. It’s older than Steve Rogers.

So, seeing as the OED does not provide free access to its sources, I looked this up. According to various webpages, included this one, ‘fandom’ was used in 1903 by the Cincinnati Enquirer to refer to baseball fans.

Thus not only do we have an early example of a word that combines ‘fanatic’ with ’-dom’ as in ‘kingdom’, we also have a useful reminder that when it comes to excessively liking things to the point of it being its own subculture, people who are into sports have the rest of us beat by several orders of magnitude.

Announcement one or two! It’s release day for my surprise bonus Leo/Sam short story, “Designs”! This story was meant for an anthology but got too long, so now you can have it on its own, instead!

It’s about…Leo (briefly) being home alone, thinking about their future together, and how unexpected this whole change in his life is, and how much he loves it…and then Sam coming home early from a photo shoot, and promptly taking very good care of his Leo.
