I really like contrasting people's expectations of Allen with how he actually is

He's more mature and worldly and less idealistic than people think

And Kanda, for all that he complains and rails against Allen's mask, is I think one of the people who falls for it most completely, at least in the beginning of the series

He takes Allen at face value as a Generic Shonen Hero, but Allen's really deconstructed and reconstructed it

Allen knows exactly how terrible people can be, and he wants to save them anyway

And Kanda's utterly incapable of understanding that
