A-Kon 26 Geisha, 2015
I know Geisha usually have the white makeup but that just didn’t work for this image. Now I’m so used to referring to her as my geisha that I can’t call her anything else.
I’ve been an artist in A-Kon’s artist alley every year since A-Kon 2005. In 2015 I was made the official staff badge artist for the artist alley, and this was the artwork for that year.
I actually did the original sketch of this geisha back in college (2004-2005ish?) for a digital illustration assignment of redesigning a wine label (I chose Takara Plum because it’s basically liquid candy with a hideous label) but I ended up not using her for it. I held on to the sketch, though, because I always really loved the feel of it. I’m glad I did, because she got some great use in the end.
The red geisha was the general AA staff badge, but then I also made alternate versions of her for the AA Head and AA 1st Lieutenant based on their interests. While the Head is into science fiction and darker mythology stuff (especially Cthulhu), the 1st Lieutenant is into rainbows, unicorns, and purple.
