20 Romance Heroes Disguised as Villains
The Most Popular Book Villains in Romance
Everyone loves a hero but what about those heroes disguised as villains? Have you ever read a romance novel where the hero of the story was clearly a villain? I have and I admit, that type of “hero” is my favorite. Give me a man who is imperfect, real, rough around the edges but soft in the center of his soul and I’m a fan for life. I don’t know what it is about a romance story that uses a…

These Are A Few Of My Favourite Things: BROOD OF BONES by A.E. Marling
These Are A Few Of My Favourite Things: BROOD OF BONES by A.E. Marling
I was wondering what my next entry in the Favourite Things Series would be when I came across a reminder on my Twitter feed, in the form of a ‘check out my book’ tweet. That tweet was by A.E. Marling, and referenced his book DREAM STORM SEA (which, however much I loved it, is not the book I will be sharing today). The book I’ll be sharing today is one of A.E. Marling’s books, though. It’s the…

Blown Away and Quietly Drifting Part III "Brood of Bones"
Book Review of, "Brood of Bones"
Also one of my favorites that I read this year. It's one of those mystery books that you can read over and over again even though you already know what happens in the end, it's just that good! AND....there are two more books after it! It is an awesome series! I’m telling you all, you have got to give some of these freebie books a chance!
“Brood of Bones” by A.E. Marling had a little bit of everything, and I am having trouble picking out what first drew me in. I loved the description, the story telling, the culture, I felt like I was with the character the whole time!! It was so well-written that I felt like a silent observer, in the character's head experiencing life through her eyes. I could feel her dress, the fabric whispering across my skin. The sweat dripping into her eyes made me wipe my own forehead. The suspense was perfect, the mystery kept my heart pumping, and the slight romance (and trust me, I usually hate romance, but this was actually realistic!!!), was gently haunting. I have no complaints, I am HOOKED!!
So what's it about? Talk about being original. The main character is Hiresha, who is an enchantress whose only best friend is her maid Janey. Hiresha can do magic by casting spells through beautiful crystals and jewels. Jewels like rubies and sapphires that she simply holds in the palm of her hand. In fact she might be one of the best spell casters her world has ever seen the only catch is......
.......to cast spells you have to be asleep. You cast them while you dream, and when you wake up, you get to see the results of your spells. Depending on the spell cast, the result might happen instantly while you are still dreaming.
Hiresha, excels at magic because she suffers from narcolepsy. Yep that’s right, narcolepsy. She has had it all her life. She can fall asleep at a moment’s notice, a good skill to have for casting magic quickly but...a hard, hard, hard way to live.
Before becoming an enchantress, she was mercilessly teased. She failed to do the most basic tasks, and was often beaten and ridiculed for this by her family and friends. Her life changed forever when an enchantress stumbled upon her, and took her under her wing.
When she returns to the land of her birth, dripping jewels and refinery instead of mud and tears Hiresha must face her past and the dreams she left behind.
In the meantime though, she has to solve a startling horrifying mystery. All the women in her hometown, from 12 year old virgins, to 80 year old arthritic grandmothers, are all impregnated at the same time. Thousands of them swinging bellies they have no business bearing, and there is something strange about the growing babies....The city is in a panic, not sure if this is some divine intervention, or the sign of the end of times. Hiresha knows that an evil sorcerer has to be behind this madness, and needs to stop him before the city succumbs to his dark intentions...but she needs help. Here enters the “Lord of the Feast” a being so evil, he is nightmare incarnated. To deal with him is to straddle the edge between good and evil. Yet even Hiresha herself does not know to what lengths she might have to go to stop the sorcerer and save the women’s lives.
If you like stories with strong female leads, with characters who have faults and vulnerabilities, characters who live with disabilities, sharp-eyed detectives, a bone chilling mystery, and dark nightmarish scenes, I encourage you to read, “Brood of Bones” by A.E. Marling. Trust me, you won’t regret it.
