A.M.Homes: Do writers have a kind of social responsibility beyond the bounds of say, a plumber or a bus driver? Do you think there's something about being a writer, or a judge?
Fran Lebowitz: No. Artists do not have a social responsibility. I really believe that. They do not have that because...that's why they become artists. No, I don't think artists have social responsibility. I think it's very important that people realize they do not have that, because if you think that you have it, or you let other people think that, then they demand that you meet their standards which are probably very poor.
