In Vietnam, one of the most effective close air support aircraft was not a jet. It was this rugged, propeller-driven attack plane from World War II called the A-1 Skyraider. Pilots nicknamed it the Spad. When it flew rescue escort missions, the callsign was Sandy.

I'm still in pain but I'm back at it with the old Spad or "Sandy." The Skyraider was called "Sandy" because it became the primary call sign for the aircraft performing perilous Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR) missions during the Vietnam War.

The "Skyraider," formerly the 20th Fighter Wing, now flies the colors of the 1st SOS Group (Special Operations Squadron), which served in the Vietnam War from 1964 on this type of aircraft.
