American becomes first US airline to debut long-range Airbus A321XLR
Six and a half years ago, American Airlines promised to shake up international travel when it became the first U.S. airline to order Airbus’ brand-new, “extra long range” A321XLR jet — a single-aisle plane capable of crisscrossing the Atlantic Ocean. Smaller and cheaper to operate than a big Boeing 777 or 787 Dreamliner, the airline saw the new plane as a way to launch service to new…
Aer Lingus: The Airbus A321XLR is a 'fantastic aircraft'
Indiana celebrated the return of nonstop flights to Europe this summer when Aer Lingus landed at Indianapolis International Airport (IND) in May. Linking the Midwestern capital with Dublin Airport (DUB) and Europe beyond that, the flight was heralded by locals as a driver of both tourism and economic development. The route to IND from DUB was thanks to plane-maker Airbus’ latest long-range model:…
Qantas A321XLR Inaugural Flight
I had a remarkable experience on Thursday 25 September, when the Qantas A321 XLR I was flying aboard descended to 3,000 ft and overflew the Great Ocean Road.
This was no ordinary flight. I was aboard as a guest of Qantas alongside many other journalists and media; as this was the first passenger flight of this brand new aircraft.
The plane, VH-OGA, is named in honour of Great Ocean Road. All the A321 XLRs will wear names of iconic Australian walks, roads and rivers. And they wear the OGX series registrations once used by Qantas on their iconic (and now retired) Boeing 767-338ER fleet.
The flight - QF1321 - was flown by Captain Camille MacPherson, who flew up and down the coast to allow us all to have epic views.
We then landed in Melbourne for a brief lunch at the Qantas Lounge before returning to Sydney on the same plane, this time with Captain Anthony Jackson as pilot flying.
On the return flight we landed on the rarely-used East/West runway in Sydney, which was an added bonus for the aviation fans aboard.
Thi aircraft promises to greatly improve the Qantas offering.
I was aboard covering the flight for Airliner World Magazine.
The article is due to be in print soon and I’ll share details when it’s published.
Aer Lingus Airbus A321XLR: What it’s like to fly the transatlantic narrow‑body jet
The newest aircraft in the Aer Lingus fleet is the Airbus A321XLR. Designed for long, thin routes like those across the Atlantic (the “XLR” stands for “Extra Long Range”), the single-aisle jet promises the range of some wide-body aircraft with fewer seats to fill on every flight. Having flown sister airline Iberia’s A321XLR last year (the world’s first operator of this game-changing new aircraft…
