The Interesting history of Binders.
A great deal of ambiguity exists on who was the first to invent binders. The first patent for the loose-leaf paper was filed in 1854, making it the oldest patent globally. In the same year, an American, Henry T Sisson, from Rhode Island, filed two further patent applications for the A4 binders, 2-ring binder, and the 3-ring binder, all of which were granted.
Even though Sisson filed these two patents in 1854, there were no binders available at the time. In 1886, the first ring binder was introduced in Germany, a few years after the first printing press. Friedrich Soennecken, a resident of Bonn, was the creator. In the same year, he also applied for a patent for a hole punch that would be used to prepare a loose-leaf paper for storage in binders, which was granted.
Interestingly, the modern three-ring binder is not all that dissimilar from the first three-ring binder that appeared nearly a century ago. Three-ring binders were originally made of a strong paperboard known as "binders board," utilized in their construction. These days, many of them are covered with plastic, which is harmful to the environment.
There are no specific figures available for the number of three-ring binders sold each year throughout the world, but it is a very big number of binders. The population of the United States alone is estimated to be in the range of 50 to 60 million people. Unfortunately, most of these are made of vinyl, and disposing of them is a significant hassle.
