About halfway through the date, he would tell you honestly that he isn't interested, and he hopes that you will not be offended. At the end of the night, he'd still offer to drop you off at your home like a gentleman, apologize for wasting your time by not being the romantic partner you're looking for. However, he would still thank you for a nice night of conversation.
If he is interested in you, you would definitely feel it. The intimidating aura he emits would fade away as he becomes open with you and starts talking about his personal interests. This is how he shows his interest - by expressing himself to see if you match him well. He’d smile a lot and be open to conversation changes, so he can get to know you well by the topics you bring up. He'd ask somewhat personal questions, like where you grew up, how big your family is, but nothing too prying because he himself is quite the reserved person when it comes to family life. At the end of the night, he'd try to hide his eagerness to bring you to your home and when you two arrive, he'd smoothly ask for your number and if the two of you can do this again sometime. Oh, and when he's on his way home, you can be assured that he'd call the friend(s) that set you up and thank them for bestowing a gift upon him~
