I’m sure by now that you’ve heard the stories. Tales of deals gone awry, clever tricks, challenges overcome, terrors to never challenge and terrors that must and all of the kinds of things that are beautiful and kind and terrible and cruel.
I’m sure you know about the Tall One and the Wyrm and the Royals and the Crows.
If you have a head on your shoulders, one way or the other, you have heard of them. You may have even heeded them, or if you are clever and lucky took advantage of them.
But Reader? Reader, do you read?
Do you know the purpose of a story, of why one may tell it? Do you know, even if offered freely, even if offered without ill or well intentions, the cost of a story told? For I assure you there is cost, if silent, if invisible.
And perhaps it seems obvious, but those who know the true value of telling a story are the ones to watch, they are the ones to wary of.
Because they know.
They know that these words shape the world around them. They know that they shape both our world as we know it and their world as they know it. They know that with the right tale, told at the right time, they can save or damn untold lives without ever being known, twist a world around their fingertips, and do so much even if they have naught but their words.
Words are enough.
Because the thought that the royals are all there is to fear in crossing from one side to another is a thought at best half correct, but understandably wrong.
There is a formless, limitless and beguiling sea where they live, as vast as the cosmos.
But you only need look to your side to realize that a sea of air, sharp and defined where they are not, exists here for us.
Their world may predate ours yes, it is true, but understand that means nothing, that age means nothing, that their shifting twisting chaos means nothing in front of this.
Ideas have power. Names have power. Rules have power.
And if it may be named, if it can be defined, if stories can be told of it, why it is no longer without limit, it is no longer without form, and it can beguile only those who do not know this.
Words alone bind that which predates it. And isn’t that so very fascinating?
Ah, but I wander. Reader, dear Reader, do you remember what I said not long ago? I trust that you do. So I will put it to you then, to think about, a parting gift for your time.
Why do you think I told you this, while you sit safe behind your screen?
