It’s probably not fair to rate this book since I only made it to page 21. However, the pages I read were cringeworthy—full of banality, stereotypes, and flat humor. It lacked an authentic teenage voice and an authentic female voice. The voice was simply odd. Do you go through life thinking “I was incredulous” or “…I greedily took in the sweet fragrance as I walked…”? So, to add to the list above, it also lacked an authentic point of view. Of course, a red flag went up when the prologue started as a dream. Then, when Airel said: “…my brain registered that he was strikingly gorgeous”, the red flag waved at me. But when Ariel repeatedly talked to herself (a sloppy way to convey the character’s feelings), the red flag whipped itself into a half-mast frenzy.
Granted, the novel was inexpensive (free), but I still think I overpaid. The moral of this sad tale is two guys shouldn’t get together and pretend they are a teenage girl. That’s harsh, so I’ll add that Patterson’s other novels received better ratings. I’ll bet the farm his protagonist was male, written in third person, and/or an adult. If that’s the case, you may want to give him another chance.
