okay so I just finished the phoenix wright ace attorney trilogy and i have some very strong FEELINGS about the finale

SPOILER WARNING

i misjudged Godot SO much like i thought he was an asshole who was just helping Maya out of a sick need to prove to himself that he was protecting Mia's legacy (which he was, to a certain extent), but when he saw mia living on through phoenix and came to terms with his own guilt i almost CRIED

also turns out phoenix didn't date dahlia after all during college, he was dating iris all along?? like alright. fine. very much introduced in the last minute, hoped they'd sneaked in a clue or two but it's not the worst plot twist

franziska and Edgeworth working together during the first part of the trial to help phoenix out while he was sick? Excellent. Splendid. Iconic. i absolutely LOVE both of them by separate but the way they work together makes me want to cry

playing as mia was not as emotional as I expected, though I think that's a good thing. we got to see a mia who was a beginner, as scared as we were back when we were defending Larry, and it was so interesting to see. also any chance I get to see Mia ex Machina again is always a blast

anyways rant is mostly over, just wanted to say I'm going to start Apollo justice but I'm not entirely ready to let go of some of the characters... like i know phoenix comes back right away and i will see Edgeworth and Maya and even lil pearls again, but still, it's so HARD to say goodbye to an unhinged and chaotic cast of characters that has been my support system for so long. the hyperfixation has been REAL with this one

I have. A take. I hate “Rise From the Ashes”, case 1-5’s name.

Main problem is that it doesn’t have “turnabout” in the title. Literally every other case has “turnabout” somewhere in it. I know it’s evoking the image of a Phoenix, Wright’s namesake, but while I think it’s undeserving of this title (I’ll get to that in a moment), at the BARE MINIMUM an easy fix would be to title it “Turnabout From the Ashes”.

“Turnabout” works as a decent enough replacement for “rise.” It conveys roughly the same idea, and it fits in better with the rest of the cases.

However. I think it’s undeserving of that name entirely. This case isn’t particularly Phoenixlike (and I care. Way too much about the symbolism of Phoenix’s name in this game. Man’s unkillable, and his signature turnabouts are like a Phoenix coming back from the dead, ect.) The wiki suggests it’s because a previously “dead” case is resolved, but like. That’s basically what happened in turnabout goodbyes!? The case JUST BEFORE THIS? I suppose in a meta sense you could argue Edgeworth rises from the ashes, as he should be “dead” by now, and they retcon it to be after this case, but still. Not as strong as the case I think deserves this title. It would need a new name, and while I haven’t put nearly as much thought into this I think something simple like “the double turnabout” could work. Man killed in two places at once, solving two separate cases, I think it works. The case I think deserves this title is:

Bridge to the Turnabout. Its original title works alright enough. A major plot point is the bridge that burns down. Phoenix works with former “enemies” (Franziska, Gumshoe, Edgeworth, and you could maybe argue Iris since she’s sort of his ex), and finds common ground with Godot, forming emotional bridges to reach the turnabout. But as the last case of the trilogy and such a GOOD case I think it deserves a cool name like “Turnabout from the Ashes”.

It keeps the reference to the bridge by saying ashes, but also this case is RIDDLED with people returning from the dead.

Phoenix runs across a burning (Fire = Phoenix?) bridge into a lake that kills people, and comes out with nothing but a cold.

Dahlia, a woman who faked her death (in that same river) comes back from the dead a second time via summoning…

and kills Misty, ANOTHER woman who was presumed dead long ago but comes back for this case.

You could even potentially argue that due to the fact that she’s the spitting image of her sister, Iris is like a revival of the recently executed Dahlia.

And the main prosecutor? Godot, a man who died from poisoning but came back to seek vengeance for…

Mia, who is another dead person who comes back through Phoenix for this case!

Miles “faked my death” Edgeworth plays defense attorney for the first day (which you could view as him reviving his late father’s legacy)!

It’s unknown whether Maya is alive through half that case, and her return could also be considered a revival.

There’s literally so many ways this case works with the symbolism of a Phoenix, but no. It’s referencing the bridge, and case 1-5 gets the Phoenix symbolism name :/
