Support AB 161
Last year, the Athletic Training Title Protection bill AB 1890 was passed by both the state senate and assembly nearly without any opposition. Once it got to the Governor’s desk, Governor Brown vetoed the bill saying:
“I am returning Assembly Bill 1890 without my signature.This bill would make it illegal for any person to use the title of “athletic trainer” unless that person goes to college, gets a bachelor degree and meets various other certification requirements.These conditions impose unnecessary burdens on athletic trainers without sufficient evidence that they are really needed.”
Being there for our athletes and patients and gaining the clinical experience in my studies as a graduate student does not impose ANY burden on me. We are here because we want to prepare as they perform. We want to protect our profession and hold each other accountable for our own actions. The title protection bill is our first step towards achieving licensure and regulation of our athletic training profession in the state of California.
With all due respect, when you vetoed this bill Governor Brown, you are imposing not a burden, but a risk for everyone in the state of California, especially for high school athletes who dream of playing in college or in the professional sports realm. We are recognized healthcare professionals and it is unfair to let someone else without any athletic training and healthcare background do our jobs and put someone else in danger.
