If the ISS crashed during the Apocalypse

The International Space Station is Massive. Weighing 450 tonnes and larger than a football field- “approximately 356 feet (109 meters) by 240 feet (73 meters)”. If that crashed to Earth the damage would be catastrophic. Now, I’ll consider the likelihood of it falling onto land towards then end. But if it did hit land, it would be as bad as an asteroid: about 35 m/ 114ft is enough to threaten a city, with asteroids being any debris bigger than 100 m/ 300ft. And guess what? Something like that falling is what is called an Impact Event.

Earth lived through bigger IE’s that what the ISS would cause, no question. But an IE like that would be enough to affect the planet’s atmosphere and cause earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, enough dust in the atmosphere to cause a mini-ice age. Just straight up disaster wherever you looked.

One major problem with this is that any asteroids/meteorites the size of the ISS are megatons heavier than the ISS. Because unlike the station, asteroids are solid rock/metal/ice, hence a higher density and higher mass to impact with. So, with that in mind, the ISS might not cause as much damage as I described in the above paragraph.

The only meteorite that struck Earth and was about the same weight as the ISS was the one that caused the Barringer Meteor Crater – approx. 300 m/ 984 ft deep. BUT again, because space rocks are way denser, all that weight was contained within an estimated 30 – 50 m in diameter iron ‘asteroid’ and its impact is said to not have been enough to do anything but significant regional damage.

Now back to the ISS. It getting into the atmosphere would already structurally destabilise it- parts would fly off, some would burn up- and a good chunk of it would get caught up in internal explosions. Not sure how much fuel and oxygen would be left in there, but I think there’d be enough stuff to at least start small scale explosions which would spread throughout via chain reaction.That would already start to chip away at the 450 tonnes it started out as. I’m going to be extremely generous and say the ISS would hit the ground with a good 100 tonnes. More than enough to level a city with some added damage to its surrounding areas.

Where it would end up falling is a bit trickier to pin down. The ISS is said to maintain orbit along the equator- the most likely land it would hit would be Africa. That’s not entirely accurate, because according to the Live Space Station Tracking Map (link) you can see where on Earth the ISS is flying directly above (it’s so cool we can see that!!! Ps: wait for the map to load). Though a good chance still holds to it sinking into the ocean, it can hit anywhere from the bottom tip of South America, anywhere in half of Africa and in a BIG part of Asia (at least according to today’s map - May 23rd 2020).

Which is a bummer imo, because the thought of it smashing into the Destroyer’s tower is hilarious to me. He’d think it was one of the Horsemen, sent down to take his head. He gets his army ready. He prepares for a fight- at the place War fought him in the game and then….

SMASH.

A giant flaming ball of molten metal levels the place. Humanity’s last ‘FUCK YOU’ to Abaddon and his demons.

Unfortunately, the Destroyer doesn’t show up on Earth until the end of D3 and that’s about 30 years after the apocalypse starts :( Given that the ISS has about a 108-day window before it starts getting dangerously close to crashing with no way to refill those 500 000+ gallons of chemicals (liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen) it burns to make fuel… 108 days it’s all the station gets assuming its tanks had been refuelled the very moment War made his touchdown on Earth for the first time.
