Celebrating Betye Saar (1926 - she’s still alive & making art!) • African American assemblage and collage artist, painter, and printmaker • Part of the Black Arts Movement in the 1970s • Her work focuses on themes of race, gender and spirituality I enjoyed watching videos of her lectures/talks and learning about her life/art making. Celebrating Edmonia Lewis aka Wildfire (1844-1907). • She was the 1st African American and Indigenous American sculptor to achieve international recognition. • The largest group of her neoclassical sculptures are in the Smithsonian American Art Museum. • The USPS is issuing Edmonia Lewis stamps later this month as part of the Black Heritage series. .
