summary: in small towns where everyone knows everyone and everything, it's hard to escape the actions of your relatives
Youâd always heard about the families of murderers being shunned and outcasted for the actions of one person, but you never thought that it would ever happen to you.
One reason being that you never thought someone in your family would kill someone.Â
Another being the fact that when Perry murdered Trevor, Rhett went to the hospital in the hopes of not being too late. But Trevor was DOA and both of your brothers were arrested, Rhett getting released because he was in fact innocent except for a few punches, but he wasnât present during the fatal blow.
It was one person⌠and Perry was convicted, your family never condoned his actions.
But that changed nothing apparentlyâŚ
Kids at school avoided you, even your friends shied away from you and started slowly leaving. You got looks in the hall, groups whispered, everyone tried to avoid making you angry.Â
It hurt. It hurt a lot to see people you were so close to turn on you like that. For something you had no part in.Â
But you learned to live with the stares and the whispers, just choosing to ignore them as best you can.
And you were managing just fine until the stares turned into cornering and the whispers turned to shouts and punches.Â
You donât know what you did wrong and you didnât know if you could go to anyone because even the staff was careful around you.Â
So, you just had to deal with it.
Rhett looked up as he heard the door open. He checked the time, 6:30, you were supposed to be home hours ago.
You walked past the kitchen, arm cradling your ribs as you turned to go upstairs to your room.
âUm, âscuse me, what are you doinâ?â Rhett asked, walking toward you. You stopped on the bottom of the steps, turning to look at him, âGoinâ to my room, what does it look like?â You were tired, you knew you were late and that you had chores to do but you could some of them this weekend.
Rhett narrowed his eyes. You had been coming in later than normal recently, but today was the latest. He was worried. You started looking tired and more tired everyday, staying in your room more often than not and he ended up doing your chores for the day.
He crossed his arms and leaned on the railing, âWhat is up with you lately?â You looked down at the steps before closing your eyes and huffing before looking up at him, âNothing, schoolâs been kickinâ my ass, so just leave me alone okay?âÂ
You huffed and walked up the stairs, mumbling to yourself, âNot like you fuckinâ care anywayâŚâ âThe fuck did you say?â âNothing! Nothing, just I have homework. Iâll be in my room.âÂ
You didnât give Rhett time to respond before you went up the stairs.
On your way to your room you pass Amyâs. You stop dead in your tracks when you catch what sounds like crying coming from her room.Â
Frowning, you dipped into your room to drop your bag off before going to Amyâs room.
You knocked lightly on her door, âAmes? Amy, honey, whatâs wrong?â
When she doesnât respond you open the door and find her on her bed curled up in the corner. âAmy, sweetheartâŚâ You sat down on her bed. âWhat's wrong?â She sniffled and shook her head, âNothinâ...â âAmy⌠câmon itâs me, your Aunt Y/N, you can tell me anything, promise.âÂ
She sniffles and lifts her head to rest her chin on her knees. âThe other kids are being mean at schoolâŚâ Your heart shattered, âOh honey, Iâm so sorryâŚâ âThey say all these mean things about Daddy and that Iâm gonna be just like himâŚâ Tears lined her blue eyes again.
You felt tears sting your own eyes, realizing that Amy was going through what you were, kids of any age where mean but 9 year olds were mean to your face. âMy friends donât want to come over anymore, they barely play with meâŚâ
âIâm so sorry baby, thatâs not very nice of them. You know what they say about you isnât true right? You are Amy Abbott, you are who you are because it is who you choose to be. A sweet, loving, caring, and hilarious little girl, donât forget smart. You arenât who they say you are.â
You gently wiped her tears with your thumb, âDoes that make sense?â
She nodded before tackling you in a hug and burying her head in your shoulder. The force flared up the pain in your ribs, but you bit back the cry.
You held her like that as she cried still, falling asleep on your shoulder. You hated that she had to go through this because of her fatherâs actions. She didnât deserve itâŚÂ
Not that you deserved it either, but you could handle it.
You sighed as you walked in the door, you managed to make it home on time and physically unscathed today.
âLook at that, youâre home on time,â Royal said from the kitchen. âWhatever boy you meet after school have something to do?â You exhaled slowly and looked at your dad, âI donât meet a boy after school Dad. Iâm usually in the library or I stop at the store on the way home.â âMhmm, okay.âÂ
You huffed and rolled your eyes, before going upstairs.Â
âHey! Rhett and I are gonna need your help when he gets back with the hay.â You nodded, âYes sir, just let me know when that is, I'm gonna get started on homework.â âAlright.âÂ
You went upstairs and tossed your bag in your desk chair and curled up on your bed.Â
You were emotionally exhausted from the day of constant looks and whispers, you got the occasional shove, flaring up your rib pain from earlier in the week. You still got the occasional, âbe careful around Abbott, she might break your windpipeâ thrown around when you walked by.Â
All you wanted to do was curl up, go to sleep and then wake up just for everything to be normal again.
Rhett walked in the door, dusting his jacket off as he looked for your dad. âHey, truckâs in the hay barn.â Royal nodded at his son and stood up, âGo get your sister, sheâs doinâ homework in her room. We need her for this, weâll get it done faster if itâs three of us.â
The younger Abbott blinked, âUm, shouldnât she be focusinâ on school work? We can do it just fine on our own.â âAnd itâll take until sundown, since Perry ainât here we need her. Go get her and meet me outside,â Royalâs tone left no room for argument as he left for the hay barn.
Rhett sighed and looked at his mother, âDonât you agree with me, Ma?â She shrugged as got ingredients for dinner out, âI think you both are makinâ good points. Y/N does need to make sure sheâs not fallinâ behind but doin a whole trailer by yourselves is gonna take the rest of the afternoon. Iâm sure Y/Nâll be jusâ fine.â
He exhaled through his nose before turning and going up the stairs.
Walking down the hall, he got to your room and knocked before waiting on a response. âY/N, itâs Rhett, ya decent?â When he didnât hear anything, he figured you were listening to music or something.Â
He opened the door slowly to give you plenty of time to react, but by the time the door was half-way open and he didnât get a response, he just opened it the rest of the way.
âHey, Y/N, Dad and I-â he stopped short when he saw you laying on the bed.Â
He sighed a little and went over to you, âHey, Dad and I need your help with the hay.â He rubbed your arm hoping to wake you that way, but when you didnât move he shoved at your back, âCâmon, the sooner we st-â
âOw, fuck!âÂ
You cried out, the pain waking you up, âWhat the hell man?â Rhett backed up, hands in the air in defense, âI didnât do anythinâ!â You sat up with a wince, âYeah, you fuckinâ punched me in the back!â âNo, I didnât, I was tryinâ to wake you up. Dad told me you were doinâ homework.âÂ
His blue eyes scanned over you, taking in the tears lining your eyes and your breathing was calculated. âAre you okay?âÂ
You nodded before standing up, âCâmon letâs go.âÂ
Rhett stood with you and watched you hold your torso as you walked out of your room.
Something was up with you and he needed to figure out why you were lying to him.
Rhett looked at you as you sat across from him at the table. He noticed you grimacing and gritting your teeth as you slung bales of hay out of the trailer. And now you sat here at the table, poking at your food and shifting in your seat to get comfy.
He looked at his parents and neither seemed to look at you or notice that you were different.
âMay I be excused?âÂ
Your voice, all though quiet, cut through the silent kitchen.
You had only plated what you thought you could handle, that way you didnât waste what was on your plate. You werenât hungry, the pain and exhaustion had zapped your appetite.Â
Your parents glanced at you and then at your plate, âPut your plate and cup in the sink. Did you finish your homework earlier?â You shook your head, âNo, but I only have a little bit left. I can finish it after my shower.â âAlright, go on.â You stood up with a nod and did as you were told.Â
You gave Cecilia a quick hug and thanked her for dinner before making your way upstairs to shower.
Rhett watched you the whole way before sighing and turning back to his family. âHave yâall noticed anythinâ off about her?â Your parents shared a look and shrugged a little.Â
âI mean, other than her cominâ home late, I ainât noticed much,â Royal said with a shrug. He didnât pay much attention to begin with so that wasnât all that surprising. Rhett looked at your mom, âWhat about you?â She shrugged as well, âI mean yeah, what your father said. Sheâs cominâ home later and maybe she seems a little tired but nothinâ concerninâ.âÂ
Rhett nodded, rolling his lip with his teeth, âAlright, jusâ wonderinâ...â
The next day goes by fairly quickly, Saturdays are usually light during rodeo season. So by 5 youâre done and getting ready to go to the arena.
You hummed as you plucked a t-shirt out a drawer and turned to the mirror.Â
As you raised your arms, you caught sight of the bruises on your ribcage. They were healing, green and yellow on the outside, red, blue, and purple on the inside. You sighed and just pulled your shirt down the rest of the way.Â
Throwing on a hoodie, you grabbed your keys and left to the arena.
After his ride. Rhett went over to the fence to talk to your parents and Amy before heading home.Â
âHey, whereâs Y/N?â He asked, immediately noticing your absence in the small group. Your parents glanced around before shrugging, âShe drove herself here. Probably went home after your ride.â Rhett shifted his a little bit before nodding.Â
He thought that was weird, normally youâd stay and give him a big hug with a huge smile on your face. But he couldnât be too suspicious, maybe you had some last minute stuff you needed to get done for school.
âYeah, she left after your ride Uncle Rhett. But I think she was sad when she left,â Amy said, having watched you leave while wiping tears from your face.Â
âWhy do you think that?âÂ
Amy shrugged, âShe was upset, I could hear her snifflinâ but after your ride she left pretty fast. I think it had something to do the people sittinâ behind us, they were sayinâ stuff but I couldnât hear because they were whispering.â Rhett just nodded, clenching his jaw a little bit as his chest puffed with an inhale.
Well, that explains why you had been so different lately.
Rhett had tried to talk to you that night but you were asleep and you avoided him like the plague on Sunday.
On Monday he had done his work with you on his mind and hoped that you were okay. That it wasnât as bad as he was thinking and that you were capable of handling yourself.
But when sundown came and you werenât home, Rhett was leaving to go find you.
You groaned as you got out of your truck. Your body was sore and your face was throbbing.
âFuck, tomorrowâs gonna be awful,â you grumbled as you walked into the dark house.Â
Your phone had died so you had no idea if your family had been looking for you or trying to contact you. You were late, so late.Â
You tried to get in your truck before you got caught, but you werenât fast enough. This ass kicking was the worst. You were punched and kicked, pushed around. You got thrown into the bed of your own truck when they were done as words were thrown at you. Your ears had been ringing at that point so you couldnât hear them.
When you regained consciousness, you got in your driverâs seat and went to the hospital, you knew better than to go all the way home and have no one even care.
Sighing, you opened the fridge and took out a beer. Everyone was asleep, it didnât matter.
You cracked it open on the side of the table and sat down with a wince before sipping it.
You got halfway through it before Rhett stormed in.
âWhere the hell have you been?â He asked immediately as he walked into the kitchen. âYou were supposed to be home hours ago! I went out looking for you, where the fuck where you?â
You kept your head down, âRhett, please donât yellâŚâ Your head was still pounding and your face hurt, his volume just made it worse. âI was drivinâ around. My phone died.âÂ
He stood next to you but you didnât look at him. He took the bottle from your hands and poured it out before tossing the bottle, âWhy didnât you come home?â You shrugged, eyes fixated on your lap. âAnswer me.âÂ
âBecause I didnât want toâŚâ You mumbled.
âWhat was that?â
âI didnât want to.â
âWhy not?âÂ
You huffed and finally looked up, âThis. This is why, Rhett.â You watched his eyes widen as he took in the busted lip and bruises on your face. âWhat the fuck happened? Do I need to take you to the hospital?â
You shook your head, âNo, but some ice would be nice.â He nodded and went to the freezer, grabbing a towel and putting ice in it.
He handed it to you and sat down, âNow what happened?â âAsshole kids at schoolâŚâ you said, defeated. There was no point in hiding it anymore. âEver since Perryâs arrest and trial itâs just been shit⌠friends leaving me, people whispering, and then it turned physicalâŚâ
âWhy didnât you say anything?â Rhett asked quietly, honestly hurt that you didnât come to him about this. âWe were all dealing with it⌠Ma and Dad are just kinda going through the motions right now, this canât be easy for them either. Amy has no parents and kids were picking on her at school too. My problem just seemed smaller than thatâŚâ
Rhett shook his head, âItâs notâŚâ You just shrugged and rested your head on your arms on the table.Â
âMaybe I shouldnâtâve gone to the hospital⌠you wouldnât-â You sat back up, shaking your head, âNo Rhett⌠you did the right thing. Please donât blame yourself for this, itâs not your fault.â âIt kinda isâŚâ You reached over to grab his hand. âItâs not. I donât blame you, donât blame yourself.âÂ
He cleared his throat and nodded. âOkay..â âOkay?â âYeah, I got it,â he said with a small laugh, making you smile a little. âI love you kidâŚâ âI love you too, Rhett.âÂ
You both shared a gentle hug, Rhett apologizing when you wince a little.
âYou need to go to Joy about this Y/NâŚâ You swallowed nervously but nodded, âWill you go with me?â âOf course I will.â You hugged him again before pulling back.
âIâm not supposed to look at screens for a few days, but can we go listen to a movie in the living room while I ice my face?âÂ
He nodded and helped you stand, âYeah, letâs go.â You smile and make a fresh pack in a zip-loc before going to the living room and snuggling on the couch with your brother.
It wasnât going to be fixed in a day, but you felt better knowing that you had a confidant in Rhett and that he would be there for you whenever you called him.
