(Collab with abbygailiglo0 where she uses her magnificent talent to draw my OC's and I try to compensate by writing this garbage. I absolutely enjoyed writing about Alniani, she's so wonderful and cute and I hope I wrote her right.)
Solas sighed irritably as he shrugged off his backpack, letting it simply thud onto the ground. A cloud of dust kicked up from the ground, forcing a crinkle to his nose. When Cole had said there was something important that demanded his attention, he had expected questions on the fade or a better understanding of spirits - Not 'orphaned' baby rabbits. The lad had been keeping them and one wasn't eating, he didn't think he'd need to advise Cole on baby rabbits of all things. At least he put them back where he found them. It was dangerous to move them after all. Still, he understood the confusion on thinking their mother had left. He was caring but Solas had better things to do. Like studying those glyphs; Speaking of which, he had a few elvhen artifacts he had to inspect. He had theory on the nature of them but he couldn't be sure. Solas definitely had his work cut out for him.
Finally settled properly, he gazed about the room, scratching at the side of his neck in quiet contemplation. First he had to remember where he placed the artifacts. Where had he left them again? He had to get a better system for these things.
His desk was cluttered with scrolls and an odd rock that glew a baby blue hue, a shard the Inquisitor had discovered. It was fascinating but- Well it wasn't what he was looking for. His desk was a disorganised mess but everything had its place and not many dared go near it. Yes, everything was in the archives of his mind...
Yet still no artifacts.
Surely he wasn't that old.
They had to be somewhere in the room, he wouldn't have taken them anywhere else. "Curious." He mumbled under his breath. He'd scanned the entirety of it but to no avail. It wasn't like there were many places for the things to hide either. He lived in a bloody circular room with a couch for a bed.
"Solas." Came a soft voice that made his heart speed up. He stiffened briefly as a mild panic welled up inside him.
He had to get a grip. There was a time when I made others tremble. Solas shook his head, pushing back those thoughts. That was a time long since passed. Calmly he managed to turn to face the Inquisitor yet even still, his breath caught.
Alniani was a vision unlike he'd ever seen and he'd been to plenty of places. He'd seen things most wouldn't even dream yet nothing compared to her. Somehow this Dalish had caught his intrigue, the only thing to pull him from the fade and its glorious wonders. How could such a simple thing affect him so? He remembered his first meeting with her. So fragile she had looked, dazed and confused to everything. Unaware of what power that mark on her palm held. One gesture and that gentle elf had closed the tear, something he'd tried so very hard to do himself.
She could do what he could not.
He was envious. At first he'd been jealous and wondered why she of all things was the bearer but then he looked into her eyes. Those stunning eyes. They tempted him like exotic fruits, such a lovely green they were. Wide and bright and decorated with pretty long lashes. He'd let his prejudices get in the way but after taking the time to talk with her, he discovered how insightful she was. So inquisitive and full of bright new ideas he hadn't seen a Dalish speak of. It was refreshing. "Lethallan?" He answered, genuinely pleased to see her.
"I have a question, if that's okay? But if you're busy.." Alniani tipped her head curiously.
Solas smiled and gestured for her to take a seat on the couch. Ordinarily he'd send anyone else away because he was busy. Terribly busy in fact but he always seemed to make time for her. "Of course, what troubles you?" The two sat awkwardly at first, he was still getting use to Skyhold, despite it being his idea.
Alniani looked around, noting the paintings had grown on the walls. She smiled happily, overjoyed to see he'd continued with the works. She admired his talent with a brush and always tried to sneak a peek at him at work. He was so handsome when concentrating, the light crease in his brow, the intense look in his eyes as he deciphered which colour would best represent the feeling of the piece. "I.. Um.." She shifted uncomfortably on the seat. "What was it again?"
A soft chuckle came from the male and he crossed one long leg over the other, clasping his hands at his knee's. "Take your time. I have all the time in the world." Liar. Well sort of, in a manner of speaking he did but not at present. He was busy. Why was he letting her waste his time like this? Ah yes. He cared about her. That was not something he was used to, at least not in this way.
His smile widened when he watched her hand lift from her lap and raise to brush the tip of her nose with her index finger as she thought hard about her question. It was such a delightful little habit he'd come to enjoy seeing. It was simple and ordinary but special because it was hers.
That little gesture made her who she was and he found himself prolonging his gaze, it lingered on her face until it dropped to her lips. Softer than I thought. Warm, comforting..
That's right, the kiss.
He'd told her he'd consider it. Idly he wondered what she'd say if she could hear his thoughts right now, he was definitely considering it. But had he the right? "By the Dread Wolf that was it!" She perked up and snapped her gaze to him but paused on sight of him. "Solas?"
Solas had jumped out his skin and he had to hold his hand to his heart to cease its racing. For a split second he thought she knew. It had given him such a fright. "My apologies, you startled me." He lied through his teeth. The panic lapped at him like an ocean he once walked in a dream so many moons ago. In a lot of ways it was a bitter reminder. He couldn't get complacent. He couldn't dare to-..
Alniani let out the most musical of giggles he'd every heard and in a way that made everything okay. Oh dear, he had it bad if this was what it resorted to.
"Abelas, Lethallin. I just got so excited." In truth she hadn't came here to ask him a question. She had just wanted to see him but after the kiss they shared in the fade? She was unsure how to approach him. The cocky, smug way he'd responded to her confronting him about the dream he made her have, 'Sleep well?' he had asked so cheekily. Well it absolutely shook her didn't it? She found herself weak at the knee's and flustered. No one had ever been so forward with her and it was exciting.
But now.. He looked at her expectantly when her eyes met his. "I have a confession." She sighed in defeat. "I don't have a question."
"Oh?" Solas feigned ignorance. He had eyes, he could see the pink creeping along her beautiful olive skin. He saw the tips of her ears go a dark red from embarrassment. She was flushed and would nervously fiddle with ehr own fingers or the hem of her tunic.
Alniani let out a sigh and stood abruptly, shaking her head with balled up fists. "Nevermind. I shouldn't have interupted you. My apologies." She went to rush away, her mind screaming at her to find a place to hide and curl up. As it turned out she wasn't ready to face him quite yet.
Solas instinctively stood and reached out, catching her arm after a mere few steps, "Lavellan I-" He was caught off guard by himself. Let her go you fool..
"Yes?" She gasped, taken aback by the urgency in his tone. The look he had on his face could have been mistaken as desperation but surely he found the exchange just as awkward as she had. The air was thick with it. She practically choked on the awkwardness it was so bad. Creators she had no luck did she?
"I-" Solas's gaze dropped to his hand which was still curled around her forearm in a feeble attempt to keep her from leaving his side.
Oh no. A peculiar feeling sparked within him.
With trembling fingers he managed to release her and he did everything he could not to look into those eyes of hers.
Should have just let her go. The elf lifted a fist to his mouth and cleared his throat, straightening up instantly, posture rigid. "What I wanted to ask was-" He wished to ask her favorite colour, her favorite animal, her favorite foods. He wanted to hear her tell stories of her family and know her deepest fears and most wonderous dreams. He needed to ask of her past and her goals.
What he wanted to ask wasn't something he should have wanted to ask.
Solas wished to delve into the mystery that shrouded this woman. Something he couldn't simply discover by walking through a dream. Well, he could but he wanted to do it the old fashioned way. That in itself was enough to stall him. His intrigue had been piqued. "Have you seen a circular artifact by any chance?" The man lowered his head, shoulders drooping at his loss of courage. He couldn't ask her such frivilous things.
Content eyes watched the elf lift her index finger to brush against the tip of her nose. A smile tugged at his lips and his expression softened greatly. Alniani broke her concentration of thought to look up at him after the shortest of moments, "I may have seen something like that actually. Did it look like a funky globe? Kind of silvery?"
"Indeed."
"Cole was playing with it." The white haired elf chimed happily. Remembering the joyous look he'd given her when he said he was going to help Solas. Something about him being stressed over the silly thing.
Solas's smile vanished. "I should've known." He grumbled out, moving his hand to rub at his face in irritation.
Another musical giggle came from the girl, only seeming to make the man crumple a little bit more. "He's seeing if he can feel anything from it I think."
"He can't simply-" He went to rant but the twinkle in her eye stopped him. "What? Why are you smiling at me like that?"
"You're such a grump." She grinned catishly. "You need to lighten up Solas."
Solas arched a brow, "Lighten up.." He repeated, almost sounding offended. "And just how am I supposed to do that?"
Alniani glanced around, looking for some form of inspiration to answer his question. Then she saw it hiding beside the scafolding that had initially confused her when they first occupied Skyhold.
The paint!
In a flash she was over and had grabbed a brush, dipping it into the goopy bright yellow paint. "Alniani." Solas's stern voice followed suit. "What are you doing?" He felt a strange sense of protectiveness towards his art supplies. It was what he used to document the Inquisitor's deeds, her acomplishments. The world needed to know her story. Now that same woman was playing with it like it was a toy. He stalked over to her since she didn't answer and went to try to relieve her of the brush but the cold wet splash hitting his face made him recoil just before he managed to get it.
Alniani burst out into a melody of laughter, giggling away like a lunatic. The bright yellow smeared across his face and highlighted the sharpness of his eyes and cheekbones quite nicely. "Are you alright?" She asked out between giggles. He'd gone so very still.
Slowly Solas lifted his hand to use his sleeve to wipe away the paint. He liked hearing that laugh. Despite his better judgement, the man turned mechanically, stuck his hand in the dark red paint and tossed it her way. "If this is how you wish to play it, Lethallin. So be it."
Alniani squealed on impact, "Oh so the grump can have a laugh can he? Bring it, mage boy!" She laughed, scooping up some green and tossing it his way.
The two ducked and weaved, tossing a rainbow back and forth. The laughter echoed up into the ravens nest where Leliana gathered information. By the time the two had ran out of energy they were hugging onto one another tiredly, dishelved and soaked in a mulicolour mess.
A distraction might not be such a terrible thing. Solas chuckled, drawing her to him to smudge the blue across her face, mixing it in with the orange to make a rather odd shade. Alniani wriggled in his arms, trying to push herself away but he had a firm grip around her waist and the more she leant back the more he leant forwards. "No, no, Inquisitor. You wanted this. Deal with it." He smirked handsomely.
"Okay! Okay! I give! Mercy, sir! Mercy!" She pleaded playfully, locking eyes with the man when her back hit the couch. It was only now they registered their closeness and amidst all the paint, the two turned a deep scarlet but the smiles on their faces couldn't be masked by the paint, nor could the thumping of their hearts be hidden by the giggles.
What they felt was real and there was no denying it, not even for the Dread Wolf.
"You're a terrible artist by the way." Solas tried to joke, brushing a pink matted lock of hair out her eyes.
Alniani puffed out her cheeks, "Yeah well you- Dread Wolf take you." She grumbled, earning her a loud, heartfelt laugh from the mage that left her stunned by how beautiful he was when he let himself smile so wide.
