How to perform Janazah Salah. (Islamic Funeral).

Foreword: Assalaamu'alaikum, wa rahmatallah, wa barakaatuh.

Death is inevitable, and is ever present in a Muslim's life. We will all die one day - this is a universal fact. So it is important to be prepared for what happens when someone you know, dies. This is not intended to be depressing or fearmongering, but to simply act as an education tool for a very real circumstance that we all will face one day.

Although you will more than likely be behind an imaam, it is important to know what everything means. Maybe one day, you will need to lead the janazah. 

Please correct me if I have made any mistakes, Jazakallah.

Steps:

1- Niyyat (Confirmation of Intention)

    Takbir (Saying loudly: "ALLAH HU AKBAR")

2- Sanaa (Supplementation to Allah)

    Takbir (Saying loudly: "ALLAH HU AKBAR")

3- Durood Sharif (Respecting the Prophet, Peace be Upon Him)

    Takbir (Saying loudly: "ALLAH HU AKBAR")

4- Du'aa (Prayer for the deceased)

    Takbir (Saying loudly: "ALLAH HU AKBAR")

5- Salaam (Turn head to right and say "Assalaamu'alaikum Warahmatullah" , then turn head to the left and say "Assalaamu'alaikum Warahmatullah".)

Du'aa for Janazah (Prayer for Funeral)

A du'aa is subjective and can be anything. However, I have provided below the most common du'aa used for janazah prayers, are this covers most things. Extra du'aas can be recited as well if the deceased is a child.

Duaa for Adults (and multiple deceased).

Transliteration:

Allah hummag firli hayyina, wa mayyitina,

wa shaa hidina, wa ghaa ibina,

wa sagheerina, wa kabeerina,

wa zakarina, wa unsana,

Allah humma man ahyay tahoo minna fa-ahyee alal islaam,

wa man tawaffay tahoominna fatawaf fahu alal imaan.

Translation:

Oh Allah! Forgive those of us alive and those of us dead.

Those of us whom are present, and those of us who are absent.

Those of us whom are young, and those of us whom are adults.

Or men and our women.

Oh Allah! Whomsoever you keep alive, let him live as a follower of Islam,

and whoever's life you take, let him die as a believer!

Duaa for Children.

Transliteration (Boy):

Allahummaaj'alhu lana fartan

waj'alhu lana ajran wa zukhran

waj'alhu lana shafi'an wamushaffa.

Transliteration (Girl):

Allahummaj'alha lana fartan

waj'alha lana ajran wa zukhran

waj'alha lana shafi'atan wamushaffa'ah.

Translation:

Oh Allah! make this child for our means of preservation

and make them a source of rewards and treasure for us

and make them a pleader for us and one whose pleading is accepted.

Durood Shareef

This is a key part of any salah.

Learning the Arabic will be beneficial in the long run, if you have not yet done so.

In Arabic:

اَلَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى ُمحَمَّدِ ُّوعَلَى اَلِ مُحَمَّدٍ

كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى اِبْرَاهِيْمَ وَعَلَى اَلِ اَِبْرَاهِيْمَ

اِنَّكَ حَمِيْدُ مَجِيِدْ

اَلَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمّدِ ٌوعَلَى اَلِ مُحَمّدٍ

كَمَابَارَكْتَ عَلَى اِبْرََاهِيْمَ وَعَلَى اَلِ اِبْرَاهِيْمَم

اِنَّكَ حَمِيُد مَّجِيدْ

Transliteration:

Allah humma salli'ala muhammadin, wa'ala aali muhammad

kamaa salaita 'ala ibraheema wa'ala ali ibraheema

innaka hamidum majeed.

Allah humma barik'ala muhammadin wa'ala aali muhammad

kamaa barakta 'ala ibraheema wa'ala aali ibraheema

innaka hameedum majeed.

Translation:

O Allah! send grace and honor on Mohammad and on the family and true followers of Mohammad just as you sent Grace and Honor on Ibrahim and on the family and his true followers. Surely, you are praiseworthy, the Great.

Oh Allah, send your blessing on Mohammad and the true followers of Mohammad just as you sent blessings on Ibrahim and his true followers. Surely you are praiseworthy, the Great.

Sanaa for Janazah (Suplication for a Funeral)

This is exactly the same as the Sanaa that is recited at the beginning of every obligatory salah, however there is an extra "wajalla sana'ukka" in there specifically for Janazah. This part will need to be recited in Arabic. I have provided a transliteration for those of you who cannot yet read arabic.

In Arabic:

سُبْحَانَكَ اَّللُهَّم َوِبحَمْدِكَ وَ تَبَاْرَكَ اسْمُكَ َوتَعَالَئ جَدُّكَ وَجَلَّ َثَناءٌكَ وَلَااِلَه غَيْرُكَ

Transliteration

Subhanaka allahumma wabihamdika

watabara kasmuka

wata'ala jadduka

wajalla sanaa'uka

wa laa ilaha ghayruk.

Translation

Glory be to you, oh Allah!

and praise be to you

and blessed is your name

and exalted is your majesty

and there is none to be served, besides you.
