Melanie and Abel Fletcher

Melanie and Abel are side characters. They are the protagonist Cyrus's parents.

Melanie and Abel met each other at a school in France. Melanie lived in France, while Abel had transferred from the United States. They began dabbling hacking and general illegal cyber-things together partially because they were both skilled in hacking and (eventually) partially because they needed to provide for their child, Cyrus. They were quite good at it, and when Cyrus was three years old, the Fletchers moved to America to partner with Mr. Monroe.

Business was booming for the young family, and with the release of Goobyland and the birth of their daughter Valerie, everything seemed to be looking up. The Fletchers lived in a large two-story house on their own private property filled with big trees to climb and even a little creek.

Then, while Melanie was asleep in the car and Cyrus and Valerie were asleep in their carseats, Abel accidentally drove over a digital landmine that was supposed to be for a target. It fried everything in the car at once and the car burst into flames. Melanie died. Cyrus survived, but he would forever have massive scarring on his face and here and there on his body from where a piece of shrapnel had sliced his face open. Somehow, Valerie escaped unscathed. This was extra odd considering she had barely turned two.

Abel became a recluse, spending day and night working on his dead wife's unfinished project Goobyvision. Cyrus, despite being 7 years old, became Valerie's caretaker. He matured quickly and began homeschooling himself (and Valerie when she got older) so he could spend as much time with his family as possible. He refused to see how unwell his dad was and how odd Valerie acted. When Valerie was nine years old, she shot and killed Abel in his sleep.
