Medusa Nebula (Abell 21)

1,500 light years from earth in the constellation of Gemini, stretching 4 light years across, this planetary nebula is the remnants of a dying star similar to our own sun, which shed it's atmosphere into space as it gravitationally collapses into a white dwarf. Such stars that are still in the process are referred to as pre-degenerate.

The remaining star then bombards the gas with UV radiation, making it glow.
