American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

A well-regarded plastic and reconstructive surgeon, Dr. Oleh Slupchynskyj belongs to the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ABFPRS). Founded in 1986, the organization aims to improve the quality of plastic and reconstructive procedures and to set professional standards for education, training, and performance. During the 1980s, facial plastic surgery rose to prominence as one of the most common specialties among otolaryngologists. With the support of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, ABFPRS set minimum standards for facial plastic surgery training and education. After the establishment of ABFPRS, residents had to possess a firm grasp of the specialty before earning board certification. In the first half of the decade, plastic surgery certification existed only as a joint program between the American Board of Otolaryngology and the American Board of Plastic Surgery. With the founding of ABFPRS in 1986, facial plastic surgery gained recognition as an official subspecialty of otolaryngology. According to its mission statement, the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery sets out to establish a procedure for the education, qualification, training, review, and certifications of medical professionals within the field of facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. ABFPRS also identifies four specific objectives, which includes establishing qualification standards, selecting worthy candidates, administering an exam to test knowledge, and improving educational opportunities for facial plastic and reconstructive surgeons. Following the successful completion of the entrance exam, new members of ABFPRS are referred to as diplomates. They receive a number of special benefits, such as verifying certification for employers, hospital groups, and patients. ABFPRS also provides framed certificates and informational brochures that describe to patients the importance of membership in ABFPRS. Diplomates also have the option of serving as guest examiners for the certification exam and members of the ABFPRS governing committees.
