House Approves $3 Trillion COVID Aid Bill for another Stimulus Check

On Friday, the House of Representatives passed a sweeping bill to spend more than $3 trillion on relief for Covid-19, and a change in rules to allow legislators to vote remotely during the coronavirus pandemic - another Stimulus Check. Despite opposition from Republicans as well as some moderate and progressive Democrats, the bill was approved by a vote of 208–199. To vote against it, fourteen Democrats crossed party lines and one Republican voted in favor. The package, which represents Democratic goals and was not a product of bipartisan negotiations, will serve as the largest aid package in US history and House Democratic leaders argued that the plan, which allocates funds to state and local governments, coronavirus research and a new round of direct payments to Americans, is desperately required to resolve the crisis. Republicans, however, have made it clear that the GOP-controlled Senate is dead on arrival. Democrats have had to deal with criticism and pushback from conservatives who were unhappy that the bill did not have strong bipartisan support and progressives who claim that the bill did not go far enough to benefit the Americans In a sign of how strong the pushback was, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi worked ahead of a final vote to lock in support for the bill, with several sources involved in the vote-counting process telling the Pelosi was working tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure she had the votes. Asked how hard she was working on the vote ahead of the vote, Pelosi told on Friday, "like normal" and she said she was "confident" that the bill would pass. Pelosi, a Democrat from California, defended the bill against criticism on Thursday as partisan, saying, "We’re putting our offer on the table. We’re open to negotiation." Most Republicans, however, have dismissed the aid package - stimulus check - as a liberal wish list. They also suggested that it is too early to move forward with another far-reaching policy response to the pandemic without first waiting to see the consequences of the trillions of dollars in assistance already in place. Republicans have also opposed the plan to amend rules to require remote voting and remote committee to act as a political power grab to upend institutional tradition. Democratic leaders hope remote proxy voting would ensure legislators can continue to pass secure and successful legislation throughout the pandemic. Democrats supported the shift in rules, which is to dramatically change the way the House performs legislative business, over Republican opposition with a 217-189 vote. The move will allow the chamber to function for the first time remotely in its more than 200-year history. Leaders of the House moved the bill forward amid defections A number of progressives, including vulnerable senators in competitive swing districts, came out in opposition to the $3 trillion reform bill ahead of final vote. Freshman Democratic Reps. Virginia's Abigail Spanberger, Oklahoma's Kendra Horn, Utah's Ben McAdams, South Carolina's Joe Cunningham, Iowa's Cindy Axne, and Virginia's Elaine Luria all said in advance of the vote that they were against it and indicated they were planning to vote against it. Democratic Rep. Haley Stevens, a freshman from a swing district in Michigan who was the focus of an intensive lobbying effort, announced that she would support the bill - Stimulus Check - not long before the final vote. She had signaled to her leadership that she would vote against it, but was lobbied all day, has been told by multiple sources.
