Aboadze Thermal Plant Shuts Down

The Aboadze Thermal Plant in the Western Region has been shut down due to a fault.
The T3 plant which produces about 132 megawatts of power was inaugurated two months ago.
According to the Energy Ministry, one of the four main units of the plants developed a problem resulting from a fire necessitating the shutdown.
Deputy Energy Minister, John Jinapor who disclosed this to an Accra based Radio Gold said the situation will result in a load shedding.
“It’s been shut down. It’s only one unit that had this problem but in that sector, normally we take extreme caution. When you have such a problem, what you do is put the entire facility down and do a detailed analysis of the problem and after determining the fault, rectify and do some test runs before beginning to put load on it,” he stated.
Mr. Jinapor further stated, “During off peak, we demand about 1600 and during peak hours at night, our demand is about 1850 so we have a deficit during peak periods of about 50 or 100 megawatts and that is quite problematic but given the challenges that we had initially, it’s manageable.”
“If all these machines run the way they are now and we don’t have problems, during off peak, we shouldn’t be having any major challenge…Until this facility comes on board, we will have this challenge and there might be some level of load shedding,” he added.
