Vampire / Elf - Earth verse

A long time ago in earth history, there used to be a secret elven society. Most wrongly equated them with the fae, as they also seemed to drift in and out of the human realm. At some point, vampires discovered the existence of this elven society and wanted their secrets. The elves were almost all killed, but some were taken captive, some were turned, and some were forced into marriages in order to save themselves.

These elves eventually became ildrat, from a lost elven word. It took time, but the ildrat tore themselves out of the vampires hold and they made their own community.

This is the society which Leoth & Chain grew up in and know. They blend in with humans as much as they can, and keep away from other supernatural creatures. Sometimes, it’s not quite so simple.

Chaín's faves in the inkysition are: Sera, Varric, Cassandra, Dorian, Cullen. Bull would be on the list but. He's afraid. He likes him but he makes Chaín anxious.

Thinking about how powerful a magic user Chaín is even though he didn’t actually finish his apprenticeship and isn’t even considered a zard. He’s literally stronger than most of the Zards in the Tower and if he had finished his apprenticeship, he would have been a High Master within a few years.

And Chaín is an outlier for most as a child of Valden, because many don’t reach their true potential because most consider it to be one of the weaker magic-lines. Valden may have been a powerful deity, but the magic passed on has always been associated with lackluster ability. Most might channel their magic into one specific nature magic, like water or earth, but they find it’s still weaker than someone who might be under Jastfaer’s magic and can full control water / ice. 

Chaín didn’t choose just one or two magics to focus on--he trained in all of the natural magic and all of the emotional magic. And he trained as hard as he could to master them to at least a level 4, where most stop at level 2. That’s why he’s able to control Valden’s Circle at a High Master level and use it both defensively and offensively.

He can bring down lightning from the sky, from his finger tips and completely decimate buildings. Detonate fire from beneath the ground. Send shards of ice like floating daggers. As long as his stamina keeps up, he can do a lot more damage than someone with just Solnaer’s fire magic. 

And that’s with an unfinished apprenticeship.

I've talked a lot abt Leoth, but this scene I'm working on focuses on the siblings and Chaín just being so angry that Chase essentially decided he was expendable that he was just like anybody else. And ofc hes pissed with her for cutting everyone else off but hes just I'm You're Brother.

Chaín's fave person in the entire world is Chase. Hes proud of her in every way and take his role as older brother very seriously. His father's last request was for him to always take care of Chasaya, for him to always be there abd he's happy to do that.

I have Inquisitor Chaín muse bc playing dragon age I just:

Chaín trying to help and being so confused at 98% of what is being told to him because hes not FROM ferelden or orlais, but doing his best anyway.

He can't read here, which infuriates him, but he eventually has to ask someone-- maybe Varric, maybe Dorian.

Always surprised the language barrier wasnt too intense because their country neighbor apparently originated from somewhere in Ferelden and therefore Chaín is at least conversationally fluent. Somewhere along the line the writing changed though, so!

He is technically a mage but his magic is still a little different than the mages in ferelden & orlais, especially considering they dont do Circles or anything like that in Alsales.

Why did they put him in charge, he is very anxious.

The mark is painful and sometimes after long days of closing rifts he can barely move his arm, or numbness when using the mark of the rift abilities but we don't talk about that.

Makes jokes. Plays pranks with Sera a lot. Just. Loves Varric for being Varric. Kinda scared of Iron Bull but hey that's Trauma talking. Qunari remind him of the Cyga.

Reckless, reckless, reckless-- I'm climbing up that cliff cause it looks like theres a skull thing up there. Oh shit how am I gonna get down, I guess I can slide over here?? Run full throttle into the red templar camp, no plan making.

Has his own stash of liquor in his quarters and drinks alone up in that alcove area behind a stack of crates cause shit's stressful

The mark aches.

Chaín doesn’t talk about how the pain radiates out from his hand, up his forearm, throbs at his elbow. He closes another rift in the Hinterlands. The sickly green light shines like a beacon, and then recedes into him. He can’t explain what it feels like. Something between eating away at him and burning under his skin. Something worse than that. 

If anyone notices, he doesn’t let them say anything. He keeps a grin on his face, makes enough jokes to keep everyone laughing. If he favors his left arm, if he winces at a jovial shove in the shoulder... it’s fine. It’s to be expected. He’s certain the mark will kill him eventually. No matter what they have said. It’s only slowed down, nothing more.

He takes comfort in the fact that he’s helping. He’s useful. It’s a nice feeling, even if he hates that all eyes are on him, all ears want to listen to him speak. He feels out of place and out of his depth, but they think he’s doing fine nonetheless. Because he cares, and he tries, and he doesn’t really have to--especially when he’s not even from Thedas.

Chaín disappears in Skyhold. He finds hiding places, alcoves no one seems to notice. He tucks himself away in his quarters when there’s nowhere else. Hides up on the empty ramparts. 

He can’t hide from the mark. It’s always with him, always there. And it aches.

Objectively, Skyhold is something beautiful. The surrounding mountains and midt make for a picturesque backdrop, one that might be painted on some canvas somewhere. The castle itself is a massive thing, quickly being repaired by all those under his command. Chaín scrunches his nose at that. His command.

Subjectively, Skyhold is a terrible, cold place that he prefers to be away from as often as he can. He needs to escape the suffocating feeling of being known. Their eyes on him, their constant expectations. Chaín sequesters himself in his massive bed chambers after missions, claiming exhaustion. It's not so far from the truth. It's also a cowards move, because everyone is exhausted, and a leader cannot hide away forever while asking everyone else to do their utmost.

Chaín knows this is his fault. He should have told them he didn't want to be Inquistor. He should have been more adamant that he was not this Herald of Andraste. He still isn't sure who Andraste even is. He wishes the fade would have given him a way back home instead. He shouldn't care about these people here. He shouldn't care about whether they live or die. He understands nothing about Orlesian politics or the Chantry or the issues among the humans, elves, dwarves, qunari.

He misses things to make sense, but it's not fair to hoist this all on to someone else. No one else has the burning brand in his hand anyway. The brand that makes his entire arm ache after too many rifts closed. The brand that everyone stares at with something akin to fear and wonder. Another thing he hates as it throbs and interferes with magic that doesn't work like the others.

Chaín considers escaping as he looks out on from the balcony, but downstairs awaits someone's judgement, and the hope lit in their eyes would die, and he doesn't really want the inner circle to be disappointed.

It's the first time in a long time that people have faith in him.
