What's Up With Aspen? The Full Planned Story Explained:

Aspen is an imp that has taken an interest in the Hazbin Hotel, and the concept that it's possible to redeem Sinners and send them to Heaven. She comes in at three and a half feet tall, and peddles herself as a researcher and an extra hand for hire at the Hotel, but she has her own agenda in Hell, and is working primarily for her father.

Aspen grew up in a very religious family, and she is very attached to the necklace she wears - in fact, no one in Hell has ever seen her without it! Her necklace is a family heirloom over a thousand years old, and was first acquired by an ancestor who stole it from a Demon for his own research purposes. As it happens, this ancestor of hers wasn't an imp at all, but an Italian Poet who would use this stolen trinket - now known to the family as an Asmodean Crystal - to travel between Hell and his actual home on Earth, so that he could pen the now-famed epic, La Divina Commedia di Dante.

Aspen (real name Danielle Alighieri) is herself not an imp at all, but a researcher sent by her family to report back on the goings-on of Hell. The Asmodean Crystal that she wears around her neck allows her (like Dante before her) to blend in seamlessly with the denizens of Hell, appearing as an imp.

Her family (and primarily her father, an Evangelical preacher) believes the word of their ancestor to be historical record instead of fiction, and believe that demons are traveling to the human world in the same way Dante once traveled to Hell, to corrupt the lives of Man and steal them from salvation.

With the help of her brother, Dominic, who works for a Government Agency dedicated to understanding and combating Hell, and the Cherubs that have come from Heaven to assist the department in their Holy Mission, Danielle is sent to Hell with the express purpose of learning how the Alighieri family can destroy it and ensure mankind's salvation.

Which was all fine and well when she got to Hell, but after spending a little time with the residents, she starts to wonder if the mission from God that was bestowed upon her family is really the right thing to do - because the plan isn't just to stop Demons from reaching the human world.

The plan is to use Holy Fire to raze Hell to the ground, and save humanity from Demonic influence once and for all.

I think at the end of the day Dom is more loyal to his sister than to his father or even to his job.

Because eventually shit is going to hit the fan whether Aspen gets the good end or the bad end and Dom is going to have to choose between his sisters safety and his father's approval.

And after their mom died, their dad pulled away and let his religious fanaticism come before his children. Dom was in his late teens by that point but after their mom passed, his sister was the one keeping him grounded and taking care of him.

He flipped pretty soon after that, devoting himself to his father's fanaticism and joining a fringe government agency that aligned with their family's beliefs in an attempt to chase a bond with his surviving parent.

But when push comes to shove, he's going to choose his sister before it all.

I actually posted about this earlier today!

I feel like this is probably where I went wrongest with Aspen. I concepted her as an interactive story where other muns could uncover what was up with her alongside their characters, instead of telling them outright - and I think that either confused or put off a lot of people.

The only thing I missed in the link above is that Aspen grew up in a high-control Catholic household; her mother died some years ago and her father turned to God, becoming a priest who works alongside Dominic at DHORKS. Her family is a borderline cult.

Aspen, due to her upbringing, does not take kindly to Demonkind. Sinners, Hellborn, it's all the same to her. She hates them as she was raised to. She doesn't see them as people, but she's clever enough to stay on good terms with the evil monster demons while she's in Hell. She doesn't want to make any more enemies than strictly necessary while she's doing her work.

Aspen primarily stays in and around the Hazbin Hotel. She considers it safer than the rest of Hell outside its doors, and while she will venture out past the grounds to run errands as assigned to her (or to follow a lead on the information she needs to complete her mission), she prefers to stick close to the Hotel where she believes trouble will not find her.

When she is not at the Hotel or running errands, she is... gone! She tries to minimize trips back to the human world to prevent suspicion, but she does check in at home when necessary. Sometimes you will be able to catch her retreat into her room at the Hotel, where she then locks the door and portals back home.
