Hinata, accidentally, because he is an overwoking idiot. Komaeda doesn’t want to wake up him so he helps him get in a comfortable position. If the couch is large enough, he might even spend the night there too.

Komaeda might try, but whether it’s a success or not is up to debate. Hinata isn’t unpleasant with their neighbors or anything, but he tends to be independant, and wouldn’t know how to ‘make friends’ with said neighbors. That said, he still have an alright reputation around the neighbourhood.

Depends what you mean by adventurer ? Hinata won’t eat food that fell on the floor, but will eat these weird, green, 100% chemical chips from the supermarket. Komaeda is the exact opposite. He likes more ‘organic’ food, but will eat food after their peremption date, because why not. Time to test with luck, am I right ? Hinata does his best to throw the meat and stuff like that in time.

hogs the covers at night

Ugh, definitely Komaeda. It’s fine in spring or summer because he doesn’t get cold easily, but he can be pissed off really quickly during winter. Most of the time he just pick another cover from the closet, but sometimes he will kick Komaeda awake.

forgets to do the dishes

Hinata. “I’ll do it later” quickly turns into “I’ll never do it”. Komaeda doesn’t really mind.

tries to surprise their partner more often

Komaeda, though the words “I have a surprise for you” are pretty terrifying, from Hinata’s point of view. At least Komaeda stopped experimenting in the kitchen, so their entire house burning isn’t something he should be worried - probably.

Once again, Hinata. Then he complains that he won’t find X or Y piece of clothe, of course.

Both can do that. It’s more about working for Hinata, but even in his off days… they both have terrible schedules. That can’t be healthy.

Both. Hinata does it more, but Komaeda has the best voice, and Hinata just loves hearing him sing gibberish while he is washing his hair. This is cute as hell.

Komaeda can try a couple of times and be enthusiastic about that but… at the end of the day, they just don’t have the reflex to take pictures of themselves all the time ? They’d rather take pictures of the other, or their friends, or even landscapes.

Both can do that ! They kinda try to warn the other in advance, and fail to be subtle about preparation, so it’s relatively easy to organize. Komaeda tends to really plan, but like… plan. Whereas Hinata is more ‘hey, let’s go eat on the beach or something, right ?’.

Kokichi has a gift for picking a terrible movie, fight Shuichi for hours until he accepts to watch it… and then to fall asleep fifteen minutes in, because of course he does. He isn’t even faking it, if you can believe it.

Kokichi pranks their neighbours and blow up their mailbox or something. Shuichi makes friends with them when he comes to apologize.

Kokichi is way too adventurous with everything that is sugary. For the rest, and just like Shuichi, he is good with his routine.

Shuichi hogs the covers, Kokichi clings on Shuichi to get some warmth, and everything is fine.

Shuichi, probably. It’s just… really not his stuff. He will try to put as much stuff in the dishwasher as possible, though, so kudos for trying to have clean dishes (?)

I mean… a day without a ‘surprise’ from Kokichi is a day where they just didn’t see each other. In some way, Shuichi’s ‘surprises’ are less common but also less expected.

Both do that. Honestly, none of these boys know how to keep a clean house. Please warn them a few hours before dropping by. They - well, mostly Shuichi - live in fear or one of their friend calling and being like ‘Hey, i’ll be there in ten minutes !”

Mostly Shuichi, and he is always a bit stressed when he planned something - whether it’s supposed to be a surprise or not. He tends to ask his friends their opinion a lot about what they should do, and which restaurant to go, and all that jazz.

Makoto Naegi? 😁

Sorry for answering slowly, I keep them for when I’m bored at work.

What I like about them :

I think he fits well into dr1, actually. We tend to lump dr1 and sdr2 together, but dr1 didn’t have the same kind of world-building than sdr2, and was very straight-forward. In this context, Naegi is a good relatable ‘average’ protagonist that anyone can identify with. He doesn’t have a crazy character developement, but it was still nice to see him take risks, and be braver as chapters came and went.

What I dislike about them :

Naegi is great as the DR1 protagonist but, as it’s the case for many things that are dragged through a ever-changing serie, he eventually starts… sounding off-key with the rest of the universe ? He keeps being pushed as the hero of a serie that is nothing like the one he was the hero of, and he isn’t even given a real arc either to compensate. Which leads to absurdities, like him becoming the new headmaster of Hope’s Peak.

Favourite moment :

When he decides to take the blame for Mukuro’s murder in chapter 5. I don’t know, I felt like it was a good case of self-sacrifice, the kind that we rarely see for a protagonist. At this moment, I really felt bad for this teenager, who is just accepting to die because he thinks that the person he is sparing doing so will have a better shot at saving everyone else.

Least favourite moment :

This awful moment where the game pretends to give you the possibility to tell Kyoko about Sakura but then… it doesn’t ? Honestly, it’s more the game that pisses me off there, because why even making it look like I have a choice, but Makoto is dumb to not give the info to Kyoko there.

Also, anything in the sequels.

A situation with this character that I want to see explored more :

I just… want to bring him back into the canon of the Hope’s Peak serie ? You don’t even have to make him morally-grey, Makoto is a good boy and that’s not going to change but like… show me his relationship with FF, and the way his decisions affected the rest of his friends too ? Show me some realistic relationships with the sdr2 survivors too… stop turning him into Hope Jesus, but put the pressure of the title on his shoulders if you want. All of it is good.

An interesting AU for this character :

Ryota succeeded in drowning the world in Hope and Happiness thanks to his brainwashing. Makoto now has to fight this ‘perfect’ world ( maybe in a combo with Hajime ? ) and understand that Despair is necessary sometimes, and part of humanity’s free will.

A crossover :

I really want to see Naegi and Cie on a stupid Reality-TV show where they have to survive on an island or something.

OTP (or OT3+ etc…. just… favourite ship) :

Naegi/Kirigiri is still going strong, despite dr3 trying to destroying all my love for it. I don’t like how they are almost-canon, but I like that they are. It’s something, right ?

Other ships :

Not necessarily romantic, but Sayaka. Naegi/Sayaka is reminding me of Soda/Sonia sometimes ( if, like, Sonia did something during the game ), but they were still pretty cute. Other than that, friendship with Togami and Asahina. Not sure how to classify them, but Hinata, Munakata and Junko are three characters I want to see more interractions with him, just to confront their viewpoints ?

BROTP :

The survivors, and Komaru of course. The idea of Toko as sister-in-law would be terryfing for him, but I’d read 50K words of it.

NOTP :

Never felt the Naegami vibe, to be honest. I could have considered it if Naegi didn’t just take whatever Togami threw at him all-the-time, but as it is… I’m not a fan.

An assortment of headcanons !

- He has 0 taste when it comes to fashion, and I’m generous. Thanks god he has Aoi and Komaru to help him do the right choices, because he would make a fool of himself at every FF meeting.

- He wants kid(s), probably more than Kyoko does, to be honest. At some point they try for her to become pregnant, and Makoto is super nervous and anxious, and Kyoko is rolling her eyes and like ‘Calm down, I could be pregnant right now you know ?” and then she chugs her weight in coffee, and Makoto is like. “Hum… I hope not.”

- He is a pushover, and has the hardest time saying ‘no’ to people asking for help. He kinda admires Togami and how he has 0 problem to say ‘fuck off’ to anyone who breathes in his direction. But at the same time, he likes that people love him. Dilemma, dilemma.

Listen, I’m always, always up to talk about Koma/hina. If anything, I’m worried I’ll end up boring my followers if I keep repeating the same stuff like an old lady.

when I started shipping it if I did :

Okay, after playing dr1 I came and scooped the fanfic pool on ao3, and I was surprised to see how popular Koma/hina was, so it kinda… made me interested in it just to see what’s the deal is about. Even before knowing anything about the characters, mind you. While playing sdr2, I wasn’t super-focused on ships at all but I really, really loved Komaeda and kinda focused on him - without necessarily shipping him with Hinata at first.

It’s really when I focused more on Hinata, and started to appreciate his developement and arc, that I realized how much sense this ship made for me. You could say that my love for Koma/hina developped along my love for Hajime Hinata.

my thoughts :

‘My thoughts’, as if I couldn’t write a damn thesis about them in sdr2. *Sigh*. They are just… two amazing, amazing characters, who were lucky ( heh ) enough to find each other, and what else could I want to ? They are flawed, complicated, interesting characters, who happen to be a perfect match. They are the definition of Hope.

What makes me happy about them :

Look how much they’ve grown, look how far they’ve come ! Look how much they change each other, and pushed each other to be better people, and look how they are still holding on after everything they’ve went through ! Everything that makes me sad about them actually makes me happy when you see that they managed to live through it, okay.

They are so strong and inspiring.

What makes me sad about them :

They lost so many years of their life drowning under society pressure, or untreated trauma… and then after that, they caused so much harm around them, and will carry this guilt forever. Even if they ever get as happy as they can, their tragedies aren’t something they can erase just like that.

things done in fanfic that annoys me :

Anything that is strongly OOC annoys me because… I want to read about Hajime and Nagito, not some different characters that happen to wear their name. I also dislike when Hajime is just given… all of Nagito’s trauma to carry on his shoulder. Hajime isn’t Nagito’s nurse, and doesn’t have to make his life revolve around Nagito when he has his own stuff to deal with.

Hajime is - canonically - a good person, and I think it’s fine if he cares about Nagito’s well-being. But a) I can’t see him entering a relationship with someone who is too taxing on an emotional level ( and, honestly, good for him ) b) caring doesn’t mean that he lacks a backbone. Hajime isn’t Mikan, okay ? If Nagito is being an asshole, he isn’t going to lie down and take it.

Not sure if I’m explaining myself well, but fics where Hajime is just a tool to make Nagito happy is not my thing.

things I look for in fanfic:

I’m a simple girl with simple needs. Mutual pining, angst with an happy ending. I love post-canon fics because it really interests me to see everyone’s take on that, but I’m down for a good Fake Dating AU or Coffee Shop AU too. As long as they are hopeless and dorky, and that their relationship isn’t portrayed as toxic, I’m sold.

Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other:

Mostly someone outside of the sdr2 group. Especially in Komaeda’s case, to be honest. For Hajime, I could see him having a good relationship with Mahiru or Sonia. But ‘ending up’ is such loaded question… they are both so young, let them live, haha. They technically don’t even have to end up with anyone.

My happily ever after for them:

Komaeda gets therapy and support. Hinata travels the world to help people to recover from the tragedy and becomes a leader without FF’s help, and finally finds his place. They found each other again and discover each other again, and start dating just because they are young, and they can. They heal peacefully.

who is the big spoon/little spoon:

They don’t sleep that much in the other’s arms - too hot and uncomfortable - but if they are just watching a movie/quietly hanging out, then Hajime is the big spoon most of the time.

what is their favorite non-sexual activity:

They watch these weird supernatural/ghost-seeking documentaries on Netflix or else. They both claim it’s bullshit, and often mock the investigators on screen, but they’ll still watch it and get super invested, mind you.

How I feel about this character :

I think everyone agrees that she is the best addition to dr3 ( at least to Despair Side ). For once, the anime really did manage to portray her in a sympathetic way, while not erasing her complexity.

All the people I ship romantically with this characte r:

Mostly Hinata. I wish I had seen her interact with other people but these two did have a good chemistry.

My non-romantic OTP for this character :

Not super romantic, but Fuyuhiko and Peko. I enjoy the idea of a Natsumi/Hiyoko pranks duo, even if I’m not sure they would get along. In one specific AU, Komaeda.

My unpopular opinion about this character :

I don’t think I have one. I just think she deserves more attention from the fandom, but at the same time, I can’t blame the fandom for trying to forget about the anime. But please, she is for nothing in the mess that dr3 is.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon :

I wish we had her see more. On one hand, I guess it 11 episodes was too short, but if we managed to force in the Sexy Soup fanservice, three scenes of Mikan with spread angles, Komaeda’s ass, and the entirety of Nanami’s character, don’t tell me we couldn’t have been spared from some of this bullshit to get more of Natsumi.

a headcanon fact :

She is quite the rebel, even with her parents, and more than Fuyuhiko. She always feels betrayed when her brother doesn’t support her, and they ended up drifting appart as they grew up - they still love each other, but they sort of lost their bond.

Hi~ so I'd be curious to know what's your take about Maki and Kaito's relationship ^^ I think we agree on the fact that her personal growth wasn't a result of Kaito's influence, but what about her feelings? Do you think she was reciprocated? Also, considering the sixth trial, I think it's interesting how her "fake" persona grew up as an assassin and hating it, while Kaito's "true" persona joined the show to kill for the thrill of it, what do you think about it?

So, when it comes to Maki’s feelings, I think they are an important part to her character’s developement, and I don’t want to brush them aside. However, as an outsider, I have my doubts about how ‘romantic’ her feelings for Kaito are, but we canonically have a confession on her part, and it’s rare enough in Danganronpa to be noticed ( until then I think that the closest we had of that was Fuyuhiko’s confession to Peko, yet the situation made it ambiguous ).

That said, I still think Maki has some kind of er… Quasimodo syndrom if that’s a thing ? She was isolated for so long, had lost all hope to ever connect with people, considered hereself as a terrible person, and Kaito is the first person who believed in her, told her she could change things if she tried to, and yes, he is the first person she opened up to. Of course she would fall for him under these conditions, but I’m not sure this love would have hold on, had she made more progress in her personal developement. I do think there is a lot of admiration for him, and that she is grateful, and confused, and that Kaito is very important for her, and I don’t want to shrug off her feelings it’s just that her love being ‘true love’ seems a little too much ‘fairytale-esque’ ( though, I suppose that would fit v3′s narrative ).

On Kaito’s parts, I do think things are clearer : Maki is his sidekick, just like Shuichi. He cares about her, of course, a lot, and he also feels responsible about her. But I don’t think there is any hint of him being romantically interested in Maki. And honestly… that makes sense. I don’t like using the Love Hotel Events for any kind of analysis, but Kaito’s potential love interest wouldn’t be someone he has to take care of : it’s someone who can keep up with him, challenging him, even.

Honestly, Kaito and Maki’s relationship is super sad fo me. Kaito is probably an idiot for not realizing that Maki’s trauma runs deep, and the faith he puts in her is both a blessing - for it allows her to open up to people - and a curse, because, ultimately, this faith is betrayed in chapter 5. A lot of people see Kaito’s actions in chapter 5 as romantic, since he does everything to avoid Maki the statue of ‘blackened’, but he does that because he feels responsible. He repeats many times that the most important is who he choses to believe in, and if he is wrong, then it’s his responsability.

In chapter 5, Maki goes back to her killer instincts, and betrays Kaito’s faith in her. From then, in his mind, he has to take the responsability for her acts. On very under-appreciated moment is their last, when Kaito asks her to smile, and she is like ‘I can’t’, and Kaito replies ‘Ah, yes, my bad’, mirroring their entire relationship through the game. Urgh, it makes me so depressed.

( That said, I still like their ship, from a purely fandom-perspective. They have cute fanarts, fanfics, and not enough annoying fans to piss me off so sail on, sail on, Kaimaki. I just like them as friends more, personally. )

Chapter 6 trial is a slap for everyone. I do think Maki’s absolute faith in Kaito had been hurt since chapter 4, but yes, it was probably terrible to see the person who had inspired him the most be… like that. You bet she wanted to sacrifice herself and not go in the outside world after that. I don’t have a lot more to say, but the parallel between the two is interesting. Beside Shuichi, they only show Kaede - to hurt Shuichi - and Kaito - to hurt Maki - so I think it was on purpose.

Mikan Tsumiki

How I feel about this character :

Ha ! It’s typically the kind of character that I love and respect a thousand times more than the writers, isn’t it ? It frustrates me so much. I’m especially interested in her view of love, for it’s almost often seen as something ‘positive’ and ‘good’ in fiction, and it’s seen as completely toxic in her story. She is a character who really inspires me, but also intimidates me a little.

All the people I ship romantically with this character :

Hum… not easy because Mikan probably shouldn’t enter a romantic relationship before a very long time. I acknowledge her relationship with Junko, but I don’t ship it either. Komamiki is good and adorable, even though it has the possibility to screw them both over. Nanamiki is good but pairing up Mikan with a perfect AI might be cheating. Tenko/Mikan is the Purest Ship with her, and it’s only possible in a complete AU, go figure.

My non-romantic OTP for this character :

Honestly, anyone who wants to be friend with Mikan is welcome to do so. If possible someone who is somehow mentally balanced, like Hinata or Koizumi.

My unpopular opinion about this character :

A lot of people are quick to just say that Mikan was abused by Junko, and that’s it but…  not really, in my opinion. I think it’s just a most convenient, black-and-white way to see things, because the truth is, Junko just gave Mikan what she wanted ( unconditionnal love ) and Mikan willingly accepted to throw all moral considerations by the window, and started to murder people and stuff. Like, Junko isn’t the one who abused Mikan, she just took advantage of the situation.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon :

I wish she was treated with some respect. DR has an awful problem with portrayal of sexual abuse, turning it into the worst kind of fanservice in my opinion. It was - poorly - justified in sdr2, but in dr3 ( and even in sdr2.5 ) almost any scene she is in is about humiliating her and/or providing fanservice. I’m just saying, it’s gross and uncomfortable to pick the character who is a sexual abuse survivor to be your fanservice character. Don’t do that, danganronpa.

my OTP :

Mikan/Happiness is the Ultimate OTP that everyone can agree on, I think.

I mean, Tenko/Mikan counts, right ? Tell me these two wouldn’t be perfect together.

a headcanon fact :

A lot of her recovery process is through self-care, and she starts having make-over nights with other girls. She especially likes to try a lot of different nail polishes - she loves the ones that sparkle !
