"All journeys leave marks on us.”
Gallaria moved slowly down the hall of her manor, guiding herself along with the help of crutches. She tried to keep a hold of a small bundle of letters, but it slipped from her grasp. The Paladin cursed quietly as they went everywhere. It took her last bits of strength to gather the letters in one pile. She bent down to collect the pile and lost her balance. With a startled yelp, she slid down to the marble floor. Luckily for her, she was a pro at falling down the right way.
Letting her crutches clatter to the floor, the Paladin pulled the pile of letters into her lap. She squeezed her eyes shut as pain assaulted her. She was still waiting for word if a druid healer would be available to help with the Nightmare taint that was making her wound difficult to heal. With a small sigh, Gallaria let herself relax again as the pain subsided.
Her focus turned to the letters. She started to put them in order, going about it slowly as her fingers traced over the familiar handwriting. They were the love letters that Arunthil had sent her during the course of their long courtship. Gallaria still held his memory close to her heart, despite all of the pain his resurrection had caused to her and to her family.
The Paladin brushed a strand of hair away from her face, chuckling softly. The letter she was reading detailed Arunthil’s reaction to her first taste of whiskey. The chuckles turned to quiet tears as she fell to mourning him all over again. She stayed like that for a long time, until a passing servant discovered her and set about getting her help.
Gallaria let her staff fuss over her, her mind still in the past. The thoughts of her deceased fiance and the taste of whiskey reminded her of something the Courier had once said to her.
All journeys leave marks on us.
The redhead wiped her tears away. Why was her mysterious friend always right? When it came to the scars she still carried, Gallaria knew it would be a long time before she would stop mourning for all that she had lost. What mattered now was how she carried on with her life; what it was that she lived for, fought for.
Every road she had walked had a lesson to be learned. Every journey left its scars and a new way of looking at things. The Paladin let herself be guided back to her rooms, her mind now in the present. What mattered now was how to deal with the rough road ahead.
Looking back at her journeys would be a good place to start.
