Setting: NYADA's Theatre

Time: Marley's Audition

Synopsis: Marley auditions for Mean Girls with Home from Beetlejuice, the Musical. It's a risk, but a calculated one.

Marley wore the yellow skirt. The one that always made her feel like warmth. Like she could glow a little, even if the nerves underneath were doing a full tap routine from Anything Goes. She braided her hair back ala Katniss Everdeen with steady hands and left a teabag in her pocket like a good luck talisman. If she was going to panic, she wanted to do it looking like she belonged to the sun.

She picked “Home” from Beetlejuice for her audition. Not because it was a typical choice, but because it said something she hadn’t been able to put into words. The song was quiet until it wasn’t. Soft until it demanded to be heard. She understood that. It felt like telling the truth in a room where people might finally listen.

It had been years since she’d auditioned for anything. Not since her first round of college before. Before she changed majors, before the eating disorder, before everything unraveled. Back then, the stage had felt like a spotlight and a magnifying glass all at once. She had stepped away slowly, telling herself she preferred being behind the music. That she didn’t need to be seen to be whole. But something inside her had missed it every day.

They called her in early. She fumbled a pencil and laughed too quickly, like that might cancel out the way her stomach dropped. She handed the sheet music to the accompanist and wished she'd thought to play it herself. “I’m okay,” she repeated to herself like a mantra, though what she really meant was, If I stop to think, I might not start at all.

She stood center stage and looked past the table of faces, willing herself not to shrink. “Mama, I could use some help here…” The first line felt too close to home. Her voice was steady, but the words caught in her chest. Not because she forgot them, but because they knew her. Every verse felt like pulling something out from behind her ribs and offering it gently, hoping no one would laugh.

She wasn’t a Regina. She was barely an ensemble member. But middle school Marley, the one who sat in the back of choir class humming under her breath, the one who thought spotlighted girls were a different species, would never believe she was here at all. In wedge sandals with edging she'd crocheted herself. In yellow. Singing with her whole heart.

By the time she reached the bridge, something shifted. The song swelled and so did she. Marley didn’t know if they could hear how much she meant it, but she felt it. And for once, that was enough.

She walked offstage without checking anyone’s faces. Her hands shook. Her knees wobbled a little. But she’d sung the truth, for the first time in a very long time. And maybe that was what made it home.

Where would you go if you were invisible?  I’m not really sure. That seems like a dishonest and sneaky thing to do. It’s not really my style. I guess if I had to pick I would go somewhere like a music store and spend hours listening to the music without anyone trying to kick me out. 

What is your biggest addiction? Addiction is a strong word. I don’t know if I’m addicted to anything. I don’t think it’s an addiction, but my mom’s cookies and muffins are the best. I can eat those until I’m stuffed. 

What is your most favorite thing about life now? That’s a hard one. I guess my favorite thing is finally being in New York and the fact that I get to spend every day with Ryder in this new city. 

What makes you happy, no matter what? That would be my mom without question. She can always get me out of a bad mood. Ryder also makes me happy. There is also music. Nothing better than a great song. 

Has there been anything that has been bothering you these days? Well currently the world is upside down and very not normal. I guess I hate that I can leave my apartment or do normal things. Also, I really hate that I haven’t been able to see my mom in over a month. This is the longest that I haven’t got to see her in person and I hate it.

How could I impress you in the first three months? I would say just being a genuine person. I don’t just go with impressions. I try to see the person for who they are. People can act certain ways to try to impress people. I would rather someone just be genuine and honest with me. 

What do you enjoy about your job? I’m kind of just starting. I have only released two songs, but no album or tours yet. So far I am loving it and know it will only get even more awesome in time. 

What is your typical work week? See this is a hard one. It depends on if I have to travel to a studio or if I can work for home or locally. I try to do something productive every day whether that be writing a song or lyrics, figuring out some melody or recording a whole song. My work week is never typical and is always changing. 

What makes you unique? I can sing, but that really isn’t an unknown fact. I just try to be myself and I guess that can make me unique. 

What are some random fun facts about you? I’m really good a Mario Kart. I usually win. It is an unwritten rule that I get to be Yoshi. 

What’s something that bugs you? I can’t stand people that are rude for no reason like bullies, people who lie or people that will degrade another person for their job. There’s probably more, but those are pretty high.  

What’s the most embarrassing thing you can remember that’s happened to you? I’m not sure. I probably fell somewhere in public. I’m sure I still have many embarrassing moments in my lifetime left to come.   

What’s your favorite place on Earth? My mom’s kitchen or bakery. Anytime I can be around her and baking with her it’s wonderful. Aunt Iris’s chocolate shop is a very close second. 

What’s something you’re proud of? I’m proud of my music. 

Who’s your closest friend and why? Ryder. He just isn’t my fiancé, but he really is my best friend. I can talk to him about anything. We are there for each other and so many other reasons that will take way to long to list. We started as friends and it blossomed into a beautiful, healthy relationship. Ryder is my best friend without a doubt.

Do you have any unusual features or characteristics? Not that I am aware of. Now I’m curious if I do. 

Who is important to you? My mom, Ryder, Aunt Iris and so many others that I’d be here all day if I listed them all. 

Do you have breakfast in morning? Of course. I do try to have something every morning. I mean it is the most important meal of the day. 

Do you wear glasses or contacts? I wore glasses when I was younger, but now I wear contacts most of the time. Just so you know they are clear and my eyes are naturally blue.

Does you have scars or birthmarks? I do. I have a scar by my left eyebrow that I got when I was younger. I also have birthmarks on my right knee and back. 

Are you graceful or clumsy?  I try really hard to be graceful and sometimes I achieve that, but sadly I’m clumsy most of the time. 

Does you like having people over? Most of the time I do. It just depends on when it is and who the people are. 

How do you get along with your boss and coworkers? Well technically I don’t know if I have a boss or coworkers. I have people helping me with my album so I guess so. I like them and they are helping me. So overall, I would say that I get along with them pretty well. 

What are some skills or talents do you have? I’m a pretty good baker. I give that credit to my mom since she taught me from a young age. Also, I guess I can sing decently and not to0 bad at songwriting. 

Does your parents accept you as you are? My mom absolutely does. She loves me for me and I couldn’t be more thankful for that and her. My father is a different story that we won’t discuss.
