Warder, maybe. Warding things for people is interesting and contracting work could be fun.

Anything involving advanced computer skills.

Five Times The Love For Jim Please!

Jim… knew what he was doing. It was obvious, from the way he handled the bit of the strex pet he’d brought her the first time she’d interacted with him long enough to bother learning his name. She’d been nervous—incredibly so—when he knew more than she reasoned he should, but he was honest in his explanation, besides being obviously angry, and she relaxed a bit. She didn’t trust him yet, but maybe she could. And besides, she could use him.

And so she did. And as it turned out, he was a fantastic teacher. And she relaxed a little more. She—and it was almost a foreign concept—liked Jim.

They were in the station break room, working on filling out the paperwork to get Jim into a NVCC class. She’d been caught up in going through the motions, completing a bit of magic she’d done hundreds of times in classes with lab partners. When she reached for a blood sample, it didn’t even occur to her that it might bother him. Sure, she knew that pain receptors were a thing that people could have, and intellectually, even knew that it was rather likely Jim had them, but she’d never worked with anyone that did, and when you study blood magic, personal space goes out the window, mostly. She just didn’t think.

But when Jim could have reacted so much more violently (or worse yet, tried to hide the reaction), he told her straight-up how he felt about it. “Don’t fucking touch me!” That sentence and the hurt look in his eyes made her jaw drop. She didn’t know how to apologize, really, but she stumbled through it and promised to never do it again. And she meant it.

But then he continued. He let her keep going, trusting her. It meant a lot and she didn’t know how to express it, but with some confused staring and some hurried chanting, she got them through the rituals and helped him the best she could, just hoping that maybe it would be enough for him to forgive her for her lack of thought.

She’d never thought that she’d care enough about someone’s opinion of her to make that kind of effort.

Jim asked questions. He questioned her—didn’t let anything go. And she appreciated that. When he didn’t think she was giving him enough information, he told her so, like with Anthony the bloodstone dealer who worked behind the bank. What he found disturbing confused her, but she liked that he told her what he needed to know. She liked that he was persistent enough to keep asking. And she liked that when he did, it gave her a new perspective.

When Jim let down his defenses and allowed her into his apartment, Maureen didn’t know what to feel. He let her come in whenever she wanted and even had his security door stand down for her. It… she almost wanted to return the favor. She didn’t know how he did it—letting someone into his private space like that. She knew that she never could and she admired him for that kind of subtle bravery.

And when he trusted her to design the safety net for something that he seemed to consider almost a kind of child, she didn’t know what to feel about that either, except for honored and vaguely terrified. But she knew she couldn’t let him down.

When Jim let her stay in his apartment after she’d died, she knew that he was a real friend. And when she saw his aura swirling up around him with the music and then she saw his control over it, she knew that this was her chance to show him that she trusted him as much as he trusted her. It scared her, how much of himself he opened up to her, but she was ready to do the same.

That was her opening up to him in the biggest way she knew how. Her wards were her life. She’d created a very specific and unique personal warding system that nobody knew the details of. Michelle was keyed into them, but if she taught Jim her system… she’d be completely vulnerable, but it would be worth it. She could do this.

And that was when she knew that she wouldn’t give up this friendship for anything.
