1. So Alive - The Goo Goo Dolls
This song’s a great one for hybrids in general. They live life cranked to 11 and being that aware, that awake, can be both amazing and horrifying. Sometimes in the same moment. And the chorus is amazing, but the specificity of all the verses are what make it a Rodney song. (also holy shit i linked the music video bc girl LITERALLY boxing with herself, you can’t get more hybrid than that)
Staring down the hole inside me
Looking in the mirror
Making peace with the enemy
2. So Easily - Kathryn Calder
When writing the first book in the series that Rodney comes from, this was the song I kept on repeat when I wanted to make myself cry. Mostly it’s about Kayti (the main character) and her relationship with him, but the variation on the chorus tracks his character through the whole series in the most painful way. He can’t believe she’d be stupid enough to trust him, and yet, for being a stubborn son of a bitch, Rodney bends pretty easily to outside influence. The irony is too good.
I'm not the only one
I know that's just what you do
I can remember your face
When you said to me
How are you
How are you so easily fooled
How are you so easily fooled
Pretty self-explanatory. To survive, Rodney learned to corral his more primal instincts into one section of his brain. It gives him exceptional control for a hybrid, but it’s also caused very serious fractures in his mind. The older he gets, the stronger the urges, the more elaborate the cage. But every hybrid burns out eventually. One day the beast’s thrashing will break the cage and it will wipe out Rodney Morgan like a tidal wave. He calls it The Monster.
My secret side I keep
Hid under lock and key
I keep it caged
But I can't control it
'Cause if I let him out
He'll tear me up
And break me down
Why won't somebody come and save me from this?
Make it end!
4. Kill Everyone - Hollywood Undead
The go-to song for fight scenes XD Not much else to it than that. It’s fast-paced, violent, and fun. Which could also describe Rodney when he’s beating ass. Also really encapsulates the unbridled “fuck it” mentality he gets into when he lets his control slip. A killer with unquenchable bloodlust and nothing to lose is terrifying.
Don't even try to take this weapon from me
I like you more and more the less that you breathe
I've come undone, I think I'll kill everyone
My, what have I done? Fuck it, let's kill everyone!
I've come undone, I think I'll kill everyone
My, what have I done? Fuck it, let's kill everyone!
5. Sexy And I Know It - LMFAO
Kind of crack, but I was deep in Rodney’s story when this song was released and it’s always reminded me of him. Very energetic, kinda silly, and shamelessly cocky. Great for lulz.
When I walk in the spot (yeah), this is what I see (ok)
Everybody stops and they staring at me
I got passion in my pants and I ain't afraid to show it, show it, show it, show it
I'm sexy and I know it
