how do you get a haworthia to root? i have a pup i harvested that got injured during the process (the bottom layer of leaves broke off) and i've been trying to save it but it's not doing too well.
It takes a lot of time!!! Don’t water until there are roots so it doesn’t rot. You can also try letting the pup hover above some water so it’s stimulated to grow roots if you’re very impatient. Autumn/winter is haworthia growing season though so it might happen soon! If you’re worried you can send me anmessage with some pics so i can give you more specific advice 🤝
I know I’m meant to be careful when moving a succulent from water to soil after water propagation, but how do I do this?
Moist soil! But moist and soil don’t work together that well (will cause rot over time) so be careful not to do it for too long. I water the soil directly after repotting and then i let the soil dry out before watering again. I don’t mind the water roots dying, the plant needs to develop regular roots!
hey! i was wondering about your succulent leaf propagation that you just recently posted! it seems really interesting and i just wanted to know what the difference was between the brown roots (?) and the white roots. and also the process of propagating succulents? super interesting, i love your blog!!
brown roots are older, white/pink roots are the new ones! also here’s a little something i once wrote about propagating succulents: https://growingsucculents.tumblr.com/post/177081942631/a-guide-on-how-to-propagate-succulents-1-offsets
Hello! You mentioned putting a cute succulent on/in dirt, and I'm about to do it with mine, so I was wondering if I should just put it on top of the soil or if I should put it in the soil, as if I'm just repotting a plant with roots? Thank you!
Doesn’t matter! If you put it on soil the cutting will grow roots and (eventually) find its way down into the soil. If you place the cutting in soil, the roots will clamp onto the soil.
it’s easier to “plant” the cutting than to put it on soil because you’ll have to plant it eventually later on. if you’re scared you’ll overwater the cutting you can leave it on soil though and then once it grew roots you can plant it.
Hi!! Its the anon with way too many haworthia pups here! I have about 4 propagation stations along with my water therapy, and some of my leaves are starting to grow roots! But some of my roots seem to be white rather than the pink i see everywhere else. Is this normal?
White roots are good roots! I think new roots are pink and sometimes when the roots are older the new growth on them is white (or maybe i’m imagining this) anyway pink and white roots are great! Also the roots from water propagation are water roots and different than “normal” roots. They’ll need to adjust to soil later but that’s no problem. You’re doing great! 🤩
odd question... what are your succulent roots supposed to smell like?... i was repotting and the roots smelled kind of.. poisonous???? it was a weirdly sharp and woody smell, and i dont grow many other plants so maybe this is completely normal for them to smell like this........... (also, would plants with root rot have a different smell from healthy plants?)
Never had the impression that healthy roots really had a smell, but i mean i’m not actively sniffing my plants’ roots so 🤷🏼♀️ also i almost never have problems with root rot but i can imagine it could have a certain smell? Root rot is caused by bacteria and moist soil so maybe yeah? Send me a pic of your roots and i’ll tell you if they’re healthy or not!!
