That is the day that the New Horizons probe will pass closest to Pluto.

When New Horizons was launched, back in 2006, Pluto was still considered a planet and as such it was the only planet in the solar system not visited by a probe from the Earth. Since then Pluto has been reclassified as a dwarf planet but that still doesn’t diminish this momentous event.

We are finally going to see Pluto up close.

I remember growing up with the Pioneer and Voyager probes and seeing the photos of their encounters with Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. I followed each probe and I eagerly awaited the day they would visit the next planet.

But one planet remained, Pluto. With Hubble we’ve gotten good enough pictures of Pluto to detect new moons around it, but it’s not the same as being there. Soon we will be.

Since the launch I’ve waited 9 years for this. Since being a child in grade school I’ve waited even longer, most of my life actually, for this. Now we are only a month and a half away from Pluto.

Personality: Like her name she’s rather prickly around people. She’s guarded about her feelings and herself in general. She keeps a fair amount of distance between herself and others. Her friends are even held at an arms length. This makes her seem cold and distant to many but she has a softer side that can, if rarely, show. When faced with something out of her element, like ending up in Eldarya, her walls go up and she becomes rather reserved. She has a tendency to sulk when not getting her way and will be in a mood for a few days. She loves her family very much and is most comfortable and relaxed around them. She has a weakness for animals and works at a pet store part-time. Thistle loves children and wants some of her own someday.

Familiar: A female corko named MerDragon.

About Familiar: When Thistle saw her baby familiar she thought that it looked much like a dragon with a mermaid like tail; thus she named her familiar. Her familiar follows her around all the time even when she tells her to stay in one place. As a baby, MerDragon tended to hold her tail in her mouth because Nevra once stepped on it, which upset Thistle and may have traumatized her familiar. Now grown, MerDragon instead likes to wrap her tail around Thistle’s legs when she is talking to other people or not moving around. Thistle and MerDragon are very close despite only being together for such a short time. Thistle often talks to MerDragon about her home, her family and anything else that might be on her mind. The two often press foreheads together when showing affection or trying to cheer the other up. MerDragon likes playing catch with Thistle and chasing smaller familiars for fun. Thistle likes having MerDragon sleeping on her bed; MerDragon often sleeps next to her with her tail wrapped around Thistle’s legs under the sheets.
