time headcanon : family, cont. // part one, part two.
as mentioned in the first part of the headcanon, time ends up having three kids. one girl, two boys, with his daughter being the eldest. his daughter’s name is isolde, and the two boys are balin (middle) and elys (youngest).
named after his deceased mother, and takes after malon in appearance.
she has an incredibly strong personality, thanks to her parents: very headstrong, fiery, and blunt. she’d get in trouble a lot as a kid with her parents for being rude to strangers -- though never on purpose.
fiercely protective of her younger brothers, and also the Irritating Older SiblingTM once they grow older.
was the only child of the three to learn how to fight from her father, as her brothers were too young to learn and link died before he could teach them. she always wanted to skip ahead in lessons and fight with a sword in a battle right away, and was very impatient learning. but she was determined and excited, and as such is the best with a sword out trio of siblings.
she and balin used to beg link to bring them along to hyrule castle and on his missions, and on one notable occasion they trailed him all the way from lon lon ranch to the castle, sneaking past the guards much like their father did when he was a kid, too. link was shocked and lectured them on wandering out on their own, how it was dangerous and they couldn’t just sneak onto castle grounds ... but also incredibly impressed with them for having managed to sneak past the guards. #proudpapa
you bet he upped the training for the guards for the next week, because while he was impressed with his kids he was decidedly unimpressed with his guards for being unable to spot a pair of kids sneaking into the castle
absolutely hopeless when it comes to horseback riding. the horses like her just fine, she just can’t ride them for her life.
when she was little, link would always braid her hair, and let her braid his in return. her hair braiding was atrocious when she was little, and link’s hair would always be tangled or lopsided and uneven, sometimes a bunch of flowers (dirt and roots included) braided into his hair too. but link never undid it or fixed it, deeming it perfect and giving her a bunch of kisses on her head and thanking her for the beautiful braid. as she grew older and her parents would tell her about her braiding skills (or lack thereof) when she was little, isolde would always turn red and embarrassed and bury her face in her hands, wishing they’d stop talking.
her parents like to embarrass her a lot, actually. she gets very yelly and huffy when they do and never sticks around to hear it. when link dies, she thinks back on it a lot, missing her father’s laughter.
she has her mother’s talent for singing, and would sing alongside her mother, or her father’s ocarina -- oftentimes both. moreso when it was only her.
after her father’s death, it becomes her and her mother singing, and her youngest brother elys playing the ocarina.
the middle child, and has a bit of a complex about it. he was too young to learn how to fight from his father, but too old to be coddled like his younger brother was. he also shares his sister’s and mother’s red hair.
like his sister, he has a very strong personality, and as such he and isolde often butt heads. they’d get into fights a lot as kids, their parents chastising them. they’d “apologize” and be at it again within a few hours.
he’s the only one out of the siblings to follow in his father’s footsteps and become a knight of hyrule. his father never told them many stories of his time as a knight, but he’d always be adamant on helping others -- whether he was a knight or not. balin remembers seeing him helping complete strangers, with both small and big things. it’s something balin believes in doing himself, no matter the danger. he remember his father’s courage and wants to be courageous himself.
when he was 9, he ran away to become a knight, after an argument with his father on how he was too young to become a knight or learn how to fight just yet. it was late at night, and he snuck out of the ranch, figuring if he left late at night he could make it to the castle by early morning before his father woke up, and it would be too late for his father to stop him. he would be able to prove his father he was old enough and capable and strong enough.
it did not go as planned, and without knowledge of how to use a sword and with a shield too big for him, balin ended up fending for his life against stalfos and stalchildren on the road to the castle. luckily, his sister noticed he was gone and alerted his parents, and they were able to come and get him. his father was furious with him, and balin was crying angry and terrified tears as he clung to his father. he didn’t notice that his father was trying not to cry either, and that he clung to him like he thought he would lose him forever if he let him go.
it was a good lesson for balin, but it didn’t dash his dreams of becoming a knight one day. he would always practice on his own in secret, but never dared sneak out after dark again. eventually, his father catches him practicing, and decides to teach him. they only get a few lessons in when his father is called away to war. his father never comes back.
the baby of the trio, with blond hair and -- interestingly enough -- green eyes, from malon’s side of the family. he also has link’s blond hair.
knows the least about his father, since he was only 9 when link died. he remembers some of his father, and has many fond but fuzzy memories of him, but not nearly as much as his siblings. he hears a lot of stories from his siblings, and is a little bitter towards them and his father for it: jealous towards his siblings, because they had more time with him, and bitter towards his father because he left them so soon. he eventually grows up from this, but always wishes he had more time to get to know his father, and wonders what life would have been like if he’d survived.
a total scaredy cat, unlike his two siblings. he’s a crier, and would cry often when his siblings would play pranks on him, especially the kinds that involved the dark.
he’s the closest with his father’s horse, epona. they share a very close bond, and he loves taking care of her. he’s not a fighter like his two siblings, and he’s fine with that. he loves working on the ranch and taking care of the animals, especially the horses. as a kid, he would sleep in the stables a lot, thinking the horses were lonely and that he could keep them company. his parents would often have to come in and bring him back to bed in the winter or he’d freeze, but in the springtime and summer they’d indulge him amusedly, on the promise that he’d take the responsibility of feeding them in the morning since he was right there. this was fine by elys, and he dutifully fed them.
he takes epona out to ride a lot in the fields, until she’s too old. losing her is tough on him, and he misses her fiercely. somehow, it feels like losing the last part of his father.
unlike his two older siblings who can’t play an instrument for their life, he’s able to play his father’s old clay ocarina - the one his mother says belonged to a friend from the forest - very well. it’s the one thing he has of his father that he can really connect with. his sister has his swordsmanship, his older brother his courage. he has neither, but he has his melodies, and playing them makes him feel like he’s closer to his father, even though he knew him for so little time and his father is now dead.
