Hello! This is more on the concept art/character design end of things, but do AD's notice if a portfolio is only white/thin/able bodied characters? Do they notice if there's a wider range of bodies in a portfolio? More importantly I guess, does anybody care? A lot of companies will list diversity as one of their core values, but seem to lack specifically racial diversity in their product/process/team, so i'm mostly curious!

Yes, we care. Many of us have always cared, especially if our own gender/race/body type contributed to us personally feeling and understanding the desire to see yourself reflected (or not seen) in media. That has always been a moral issue, but now it is also an economic one as well, and unfortunately missteps are being made constantly. But I believe these are signs, however clumsy, of improvement overall.

As an AD who cares deeply about representation in their field, I can tell you I have been stuck in the extremely awkward situation of not being able to find someone who specializes in the representation I need for a project, so then trying to ascertain whether an artist is a member of a certain race, gender, age group, sexual orientation, or body type so they can bring their personal experience to a project. It is SO MUCH EASIER if representation is depicted in your portfolio and, if it is an identity you personally have, denoted in your about page. I know outdated thinking has many artists scared to be pigeonholed as a “black artist” or “feminist artist” or X-artist, but if you feel safe and have the interest to depict characters of greater diversity we really really really need you now. Please make yourself easy to find!

Also, this doesn't just apply to gender, race, sexual orientation, and body type, this also applies to any specialty knowledge, expertise, and hobbies you have! I know illustrators who are constantly tapped for golf articles because they love golf. The same applies to whether you’re a plant person, collect antique bottles, or know how to knit.

We absolutely are not anti-kink/NSFW/etc, but if you cannot be differentiated from a porn bot, we will block you. We’d prefer not to sift through a bunch of porn to figure out if you are a person or a bot. semi-NSFW art does not count, of course.

REQUESTS:

Requests are almost always open, we will let you all know if they close. They will be completed anywhere between thirty-ish minutes to several days (depending on complexity, general motivation, etc). They’ll be done in whatever order is most convenient.

How to request something:

-Explain which flag you want. You may have to give a basic description (colours, stripes/detail, etc.) if it’s an uncommon one, or if you want a version that’s different than the commonly used one.

-We’re ok accepting requests even if it’s for a flag we haven’t made yet, as long as it isn’t pro-exclusionist (e.g. the transmed flag) or pro- any of the other groups in the DNI list.

-Extra details (character names, themed flags, symbols, etc.).

-Tell us if we’ve made a flag wrong please! We don’t mind fixing it. Or if there’s simply a different version you’d prefer.

-We aren’t willing to make icons by stealing fanart. Official art is fine (as long as we are able to find who made it, so we can credit them).

Unfortunately, neither of us are good with vague instruction. If we don’t understand your request, we will ask for further explanation.

Hey! My name’s Robyn, I’m 19 and live in Cape Town, South Africa.

I’m in my first year at university, planning to major in Film Production and Linguistics :) This semester I’m also doing Psychology and Etymology as electives.

I’m pretty bad at studying, so I made this blog to motivate myself and hopefully get over my serious habit of procrastination. Also, I almost definitely have some sort of sleep disorder though I’m not sure which one, and I have fibromyalgia, which is like a mixture of chronic pain and arthritis (although that’s also hard to diagnose so nobody really knows.) Essentially I’m tired and in pain a lot of the time, which just gives me more excuses/reasons not to be studying and doesn’t really help with, you know, achieving goals and things. So I’m trying to use the time when I’m actually capable of doing things to do the things, instead of just daydreaming about what I should be doing and not making any effort to Just Do It.

Luckily for me I think I do have an abnormally good semantic memory, so I don’t actually need to spend as much time studying as most people do (or maybe most people are just spending an excessive amount of time studying, I can’t tell ??)

Anyway, I’m trying to get myself to study a bit more consistently so that I don’t keep falling into the trap of being too stressed out to study before a test.

I’m pretty new to studyblr still, so let’s hope this works out!
