— PERSONALITY.

— BACKGROUND.
ririka was born and grew up in hakodate. her family was very small, as all of her grandparents had passed away before she was born and only her father had a sibling, a brother, but he had immigrated to the united states shortly after ririka was born.
she grew up in a very loving household. her mother worked at a dance studio, and liked to joke that ririka "learned how to dance before she learned how to walk". because of how much fun she was having when playing karaoke with her parents, they signed her up for singing lessons.
in 2OO9 she saw 2ne1 on television and ever since then it was her dream to become an artist in korea. she studied korean in secondary school, continued her dance and voice training, and in late 2O16 passed the yg auditions in tokyo.
she then moved to tokyo, leaving her parents behind in hakodate. there she was the only female trainee for most of the time, but she quickly became friends with the other trainees, especially mashiho - who had joined yg prior to her - and haruto and yoshi, who had passed the auditions alongside her. a year afterwards asahi joined yg entertainment as well and quickly became friends with all of them.
in 2O18 they were notified to pack their things and join the korean trainees for a show, which would decide the members of an upcoming new yg group. because of some miscommunications between staff members, ririka also went to seoul. this mistake was only noted when she walked in alongside the other japanese trainees. yg was surprised to say the least and they had to take a shooting break to figure out why she was there. to say that those were some of the most nerve-wrecking moments of her life would be an understatement. yg ended up allowing her to perform her audition song, "for the entertainment factor" as he said. however, she was very talented and the company decided to keep her in the show. many viewers believed that this was only to gain more views and to let more people know about the upcoming group. at first this was the case, but ririka quickly gained popularity, both among the trainees and the audience. while she did not end up being chosen as one of the top7 for the group, she was added along with jihoon, yoshi, mashiho, asahi and doyoung.
