I thought I'd make a progress .gif of my newest picture. It... might not be the best choice for a progress .gif, but someone might like it! Would you like to see more progress .gifs in the future?

Super early picture of an Archeopteryx for someone. :U
I wouldn't normally post such an early drawing, but I've never drawn an Archeopteryx before and I'd like critiques on the anatomy. I'm not going for a 100% scientifically accurate drawing here, but I would like to at least catch the major errors before I get into painting. I'm mostly unsure about the wing shape and the claws. I think I made the wing claws too long. Hmm... :/
Redlines are fine with me!
I really want to work on these today, but I'm just so freaking frustrated with my coloring that I simply can't. I'm starting to realize that I overshade and overhighlight EVERYTHING. EVERY. THING. The more I try to get away from it and add midtones, the worse it gets (see: dumb dragon portrait). Ugh. Does anyone have any tips on shading with actual midtones? This just... isn't going away for some reason.
Also, I kiiiiind of hate shading dragon faces because I don't know what to do with them. >.> I just.... don't understand the planes of a dragon's face... at all. I mean, I try to look at dinosaur skulls and junk but I have a really hard time translating that over to a muscled face. At least with humans there are resources like Loomis' books which I can look at. When it comes to dragons, I'm on my own. It kind of sucks because I DO like dragons - I'm just no good with them. (mostly it's that indented part on the muzzle that drives me batty)
This is more of a vent than anything else, but I am cool with critique. Now I'm gonna leave before I break my tablet in half. XD
The greyscales are mostly done, I guess? Not too sure about them at the moment.
Does the water ripple effect look okay to you guys? Is it clear that there are lilypads and fish in the water? The fish will be more obvious when colors are added, but I'm not sure if the lilypads are too loose at this moment. Hmm. :I
Early WIP of a sketch trade with Circuitdruid on DA. I would finish this tonight (I still need to draw the weapons and fix a few things) but I'm just not feeling it right now. IDK, we'll see... I guess. Crits and redlines are fine in the meantime. :J Something about the right foot (our right) is bothering me, though.
