A quick gift made for Favnoir on Flight Rising. It's their cool pearlcatcher bro, Shiro: http://flightrising.com/main.php?dragon=19447957 This was originally going to be a quick ballpoint pen drawing, but I thought that it would be a good chance to practice my digital lines/sketches. It's been YEARS since I've made any clean lines in PS, and boy did the final time reflect that. I think this ended up taking me longer than some of my fully painted headshots, haha. But, hey, I got the practice in at least. Maybe I'll finally get started on those ref sheets that I've been putting off for forever. (ref sheets, oh boy. X__x) And please forgive the gratuitous dragon back. I've been studying back anatomy recently, so I had to include it somehow. It was fun to find the balance between showing too many muscles in the final (which will make the character look emaciated) and showing none of them at all. If anything looks off, just let me know! (PS: the spots on his mane makes it look like he has shiny, shiny anime hair. ngl, that's my favorite part of all of this.) I hope you like it! Ending with a question mark so people can comment ?

My Fantasy-xchange picture for August, made for Godsmaw! It's her awesome werespider character, Scorpia.

I really like how this came out. This is the sort of rendering style that I've been trying to pull off for a while now, but it never seemed to come together like I was imaginging. But I love clean, simple painting styles like this.

Okay guys, it's gonna be a while before I can post my next picture (since it's kinda big), so I thought it would be a good idea to post some studies I've done just to tide you over. Each of these took around 30 minutes a piece, except for the ones that didn't, haha. :P I did all of them on July 4th (woo, America!).

These are shown at the original painting size.

Info (starting at the top left, going right and then down): 1) Based on an awesome photo I found on Google. Yes, the colors really were that vivid.

2) Original photo: http://argosxilow.deviantart.com/art/Red-2-59402607 I stuck to the photo when I started this one, but then I started playing around with the composition and blah blah blah, so now it's a dragon sitting on a dragon-head rock. Enjoy.

3) It might not look like it, but this one was the HARDEST one to complete. Sure, those dunes look like they would be easy, but that's a trap. Oooh boy is it a trap. This one probably took me around 45 minutes since I had to keep fiddling around with it just to get it to looking okay. 5) The colors are so pretty in the photo, and that sand is so niiiice. The vegetation came out looser than I wanted though, but I'm a bit limited with Elements simple brushes. For some reason, I can paint fairly quickly when I have a photo ref to go by. But I get myself into trouble when I have to invent everything myself, which is why my art is so dang slow. (Maybe I should stick to pet portraits or something. >____>)

Critique is NOT desired this time! Sorry, but I've seen artists get nitpicked like crazy when it comes to photo studies like this. Are there errors in all of these pictures? Of course, there always are. But I was only trying to capture the general look and feel of the photos as quickly as I could. If I wanted to make a 1:1 copy of them, I would need a lot more time than 30 minutes a piece. |D

To put it simply: if an artist charges "X" amount for their work and gets sales at "X" amount, then (spoiler alert!), their artwork isn't "insanely priced." If an artist is "charging too much" for their work, then their work simply won't sell. Duh.

Wooo finally making progress on this thing.

A new picture I'm working on. Woo~

Critiques are cool. I still have to fiddle around with the color of the light; it looks a bit too colorless right now. I wanted something more obviously blue.

I'm also planning on painting some leaves on those trees in the background. The fact that I used a brush for them is a bit too obvious right now. :P

This is one of those pictures where switching to black and white will either be super helpful or a pain. Who knooows.

I'm kind of burning out on it again, so I think I'm gonna take a break with it. Mostly, I'm not sure how to render the feathers on the archeopteryx. Feathers are... quite an odd thing to paint, I have to say. They're smooth (mostly) but they can also be a bunch of lumps. It's quite different from painting fur.

Critiques are fine. Just keep in mind that the bottom part of the archeopteryx = unfinished.

I can't believe that I've been working on this since June and it isn't done. Gaaah. Sure, I've worked on other stuff as well, but it's still kinda ridiculous. Man, I wish I could sit down and finish a painting in 2-3 hours like some artists can. Anyway, critiques are cool with me. I'm mostly unsure about the composition and the lighting. Does the lighting look okay on the flowers and the leaves? Are the branches in the background okay or do they distract from the foreground? (Yeah, I know the branch shapes in the background are pretty rough right now. I'll fix them later.) Is the archeopteryx the right size? I followed some size charts from Wikipedia but the sizing could still be off. Critiques on anatomy are fine as well, but please keep in mind that I'm still reworking the archeopteryx's wings and leg/tail feathers. (By the way, thanks for pointing out the leg feathers to me, sciroccopteryx. I'm sorry I missed your reblog earlier. I thought I responded to it right after you left it, but I guess I didn't. Please don't hate me forever. *single tear* ) Also, does anyone know about the archeopteryx's "hands"? How dexterous were they? I want it to look like she's gripping the branch, but I'm not sure how far I should take it.
